Nothing much for me to add, the photo's great and I'm sold. I love watches and don't have a Rado - I wonder if Santa will bring me one?? (No chance, I think.) |

Hi Dick,
Thanks for your comments. "Macro" seems to be a wooly concept - what magnification ratios do you consider to be the bounds of macro?
I didn't specifically record which method I used, but the file name is 2018-11-28 18-15-35 (A,Radius8,Smoothing4).jpg - I would guess that the "A" means that I used method A. I wonder what the "18-15-35" means.
Yes, I see there are lots of settings to play with, I need to put some time aside to try them. Is there any guidance anywhere on which method and setting best suit certain types of photo?
I like your changes, particularly the removal of the crossing leaf.

It reminds me of the mouth of an alien in a sci-fi film!
f27 sounds interesting - do you mean lens setting or effective after allowing for your extension? Normally the gurus would be tut-tutting mumbling about loss of sharpness due to diffraction as such a small aperture, but it looks quite good to me in this respect. It certainly has given you an acceptable depth of field.
Do you think that a little more of the petals at the bottom would make it more balanced? |

The lovely irridescent colours have been well captured. Lots of nice detail to be seen even at this resolution. The flowing lines give movement to a static subject I think.
I'd prefer the "eye" of the pattern a bit less central. Cropping off a bit of the bottom would help, although adding a bit more to the top if possible might also be a good way of enhancing the feeling of flow. |

I like photos of bark and wood grain. Usually these lend themselves well to mono as it's the shape and textures that make them interesting usually. However the simplicity of the colours here demands colour! It makes an interesting colour photo.
The natural lighting is perhaps a bit harsh giving some heavy shadows - a reflector might have helped lighten them. |

Oh well, for what it's worth, I was encouraged to enter a couple of portraits into the recent individual portrait comp as it was said there were few entries from England, so I put this one in...... and came last. |

Thanks, Stan, I do like it. It is a microphone, unfortunately attached to the instrument so when she moved, it was still in the way. I could clone it out, but in a way it sort of proves she was performing rather than posing. |

We have a couple of "informal" competitions in the year, one for PDIs and one for prints, member scored, on a knock-out basis, which is good fun for entering unusual pictures. Plus one for AVs. (Not very popular but it's the club president's favourite comp unfortunately.). I've got to say that I think we have too many formal competitions, although out of a club of about 38 members, we usually get 15-20 entering each one, so generally they are popular here. We have 6 such comps per year, and 3 or 4 interclub ones with local clubs. It's just a lot of work for the poor old competition secretary (me)! |

No, I was only joking - plagiarism isn't my style! I just like it. Thanks for your offer, but I'll just try to copy you [the most sincere form of flattery, you'll recall :-)]
Normally I don't use Lightroom. However I've just bought a copy of Lightroom 5 for our old club computer. We've recently bought a new laptop for me (I look after our IT and competitions), leaving our old laptop for loaning out to members (especially beginners) to try new software. So I've been putting various programs on it, and Lightroom seems very popular so I got that too. Perhaps I can give it a go when the computer's not on loan. I'll try the clarity brush in Affinity and see what that gives me. |

I don't think I've got anything to add. Indeed, intriguing! |

I think it's a pleasing portrait of the couple, Abhijeet. I think the contrast and tones are spot on. Just losing a little detail in the bride's dress due to it being so highlight, could you burn it in a little? Also if there's a little more space at the bottom on the original, I'd like to double the distance between the bottom of the dress and the edge to balance it a bit more.
Compositionally I think it's very pleasing. Perhaps the only thing I'd suggest would be to crop out the tree trunk on the right as it's rather distracting, especially with its interesting two-tone. |

He doesn't look to happy about it, either! An interesting subject, well photographed I think.
However I think it could be made more puchy by really cropping hard, taking the bottom off just below the chin (or een just below the ear, although the nose spoils it a bit then) and the left off just left of his ear. You might need to tone down the vest straps whic are quite eye-pulling. What do you think? |

Next Tuesday at my local club we are having a competition with the theme "Like a painting". Apparently "Like a pencil sketch" is also allowed. Please can I pinch this for that? I'd love to know how you did it.
So, I really like this. The texture of the house and horse is very drawing-like. The grass perhaps is less so, but despite that I think the result is really interesting and pleasing. I think I'd have cloned out the fence and lean-to on the left of the building. And also the little detail on the right of the building (a caravan?)Perhaps the black sky you've introduced might be better a little lighter? But I still want to pinch it :-)

Yes, I think it's a nice picture of the heron. This photo is interesting to me in that it has a nice reflection, and an unusual pose, the bird looks ready to grab a fish it's spotted under the water. I like the tone and composition. My criticism would be that there are some heavy shadows without detail and some blown highlights similarly bare - the consequence of the wrong time of day, I think. Maybe raw processing would improve this? (If you took it.) |

Yes, it is difficult to guess what the background is in mono. I must confess that my initial impression was that this was a festive shot of a metal-coated leaf! It really does look like silver to me.I think that the texture is nice, and the range of tones is good, but somehow this photo just doesn't grab me after the initial curiosity. Sorry! |
