Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
64 Jul 18 Reply Hi Dorinda,
Thanks for your idea. Yes, indeed I probably did consider this (it's quite rare for me not to crop my pictures a little) but now I've looked carefully I think I could have taken a little off. I've sometimes been criticised (not here) for over-cropping and not leaving enough space around key points, but taking off half the "negative space" between the rocks and the frame does look nice. On the print I've just made for a competition (see below) there's more detail than appears on the image here, and there's some tonal gradation with the very bottom being darker than the area next to the rocks and so I'll not reprint that. But as a PDI I might, I need to get the projector out to decide.

64 Jul 18 Reply Thanks, Ian. Nice to speak to a "local". I printed this for a competition last week (Camping and Caravanning Club Photo Group) and submitted my entry list having erroneously titled it "West Kirby lighthouse" so I panicked when I saw your comment, but fortunately I got it right here! I live near Malpas after 35 years in Chester but don't get down the Wirral very often [plus I get confused in my old age :-) ] Jul 25th
64 Jul 18 Reply Sounds like a worse dry spell than here at the moment. I've not cut my lawns for 6 weeks, they are like straw.
I saw this image in some woods - a fungus which I think looks rather like a face!

64 Jul 18 Reply Sounds like you need a motorhome! I find it very tempting to collect gear, but generally I sell what I think is being superceded, although I've kept the last couple of cameras as you get peanuts on ebay and a camera left in each vehicle can be very handy.
Cell phones are indeed getting quite good. I went to a talk on them last year. The guy was only into iPhones, but indicated that Android is similar. He showed loads of software aimed specifically at cellphones and with this (and probably with other software) they can produce surprisingly good pictures as long as you don't need a long focal length. Although I think that is changing too. Now that such small sensors are reasonably capable, it certainly shows that talk of micro 4/3 being too small is nonsense, but those who have tried it know that anyway ;-)

64 Jul 18 Reply Wow, that's some list! I think we call that a photo store round here. Many thanks, it might be used if my small collection looks like expanding and gets questioned at home!! Jul 20th
64 Jul 18 Reply Yes, me too, but trips that far afield need to be as a couple for us too. Closer to home, my wife is very good in letting me go off doing my hobbies, but she has several herself!

Might I suggest micro 4/3 to reduce the weight burden? I love the results from my "light" kit - OM-D E-M5ii plus Olympus 14-150ii f4-5.6 and a 3rd party grip (the inbuilt handgrip on the 5 is shallow) and a spare battery - weight with wrist strap and lens cap 900g (2 lb). A few filters would add a bit but at 58mm diameter, not much. I prefer my M1ii and Pro lenses and <1kg Benro carbon tripod of course, but I carry the M5 most of the time in a small camera bag with wallet, phone, coins and specs - total 2.2kg (4 lb 14 oz)- hardly noticeable. When the chips are down, it's not quite as good as full frame, but no judge has commented adversely if I've taken the picture properly. I also have a bendy "tripod" - works OK with such a light camera.

64 Jul 18 Reply Ah, I see now. You can see I don't do crossword puzzles! Yes, it's a nice natural history action shot, but I like the one here better! Jul 19th
64 Jul 18 Reply Thanks for that hint, Stan, I'll give it a go. Judges always seem to want to make some criticism (maybe they think it suggests they are beaten if they can't suggest an improvement!) so it would be one less opportunity for them. Jul 18th
64 Jul 18 Comment I love experiments, and a negative leopard is interesting. I agree that the fussiness of the background spoils it for me. An experiment in progress! Jul 18th
64 Jul 18 Comment Yes, at first sight I think this looks like a nice portrait, well posed, attractive lighting, pretty girl.

However I notice that the nose and eyes look very soft, even out of focus, and my second thought was it's been done with a soft focus filter. But no, the hair is relatively sharp, so my conclusion it's a depth of field / focus point problem. I think it would have been better if this had been reversed (sharp eyes and softer hair).

There's also a multiple highlight in her eyes - I prefer a single one.

64 Jul 18 Comment I love the punch and impact of this picture. It is high key suppose, but there's plenty of black there, so I see this more as a tone separation - there's little grey here. I used to love doing that in the wet darkroom, I must try it again.

I wonder if a crop of the top (say half way to the head) and bottom (up to the first black detail) improves it?

Sounds like you have a Panny 100-400? I have one too, it's a super lens!

What's "G19"?

64 Jul 18 Comment To me it looks like two giant footprints in the sand! An interesting abstract. Jul 18th
64 Jul 18 Comment My ha'penny worth is that I think Oliver's change is an improvement, but I can see it's a matter of taste. I like the approach of blurring the woman at the top. My approach would have been be to clone it out, which sometimes I find is slightly noticeable, but the blurring works really well, it's a technique I'll try to remember. The bright area does attract the eye, but then is a bit overpowering for me, and the overall effect of dimming it I think is good, and the extra texture detail I like.
In terms of the capture and street story, I think it's top class.

64 Jul 18 Comment It's a while since I visited Paris, but I seem to recall the Arc roundabout was a bit of a nightmare to drive through if you're not used to it. I suppose it depends what you wanted to highlight here - the architecture or the environment. Both are interesting! This is a well-caught, well processed record of the architecture. (I think it needs a few pictures to do it complete justice as the carving all over it is super and worth exploring.)

Small world, as in this round I posted a long exposure image where the ND filter allowed a 30 second exposure which blurred out all the waves on the sea (and streaked the clouds a bit). I've not done it but I've seen pictures of shopping malls during open hours with hardly anyone in them - apparently. The same effect is working, although the odd stationery or very sedentary shopper is shown. You can do this with any similar scene of course, including "getting rid" of cars here. Pedestrians and indeed anything moving will become less visible to the point of extinction.
So maybe Ansel and a plate camera and a slow emulsion did the same thing.

64 Jul 18 Reply Hi Jerry,

I sharpen (I still like unsharp mask although some discussons I've read suggest it's old hat and that clarity and high pass methods are better, but it works for me) and then I denoise.

64 Jul 18 Reply I do agree, our group is very useful as well as great fun. When the winter comes I'd like to join another one as well, I think that's allowed. Although I must get on with my Creating Competitive Images course, I'm stuck on the portrait lesson, it's not my forte.
I've just noticed that I claimed it was a Panny lens; oops, the 12-40 is an Olly lens of course.
