Indeed you are. We've often thought about a trip to the USA, but it's such a big place with so many interesting (and widespread) areas. I can remember a time management tutorial that said "How do you eat an elephant? Answer - in small portions". Maybe we'll have to do that. This year however it's north Spain, south France and the good old UK in our motorhome. |

No telepathy of teleporation here!
I see your PTD dilemma. It's not a category I've come across, I guess it has editing limits like nature. But even definitions of "nature" seem to be softening with limited editing allowed No such allowance here? |

Super, I like the idea and the result.
To me the focus of interest is the building front and balcony, so I'd get cropping, removing the sloped-roof building on the right, the darker area at the bottom, and a bit from the left for balance. That leaves the light areas to be toned down as suggested. |

I agree with those comments. To me, a little more space on the right would be a good improvement. If you took a jpg in your camera, it will have been sharpened by default, but even so as John suggests, a bit more use of sharpening might have helped. It's easy to overdo that and once noticed, sharpening artifacts are definite no-no's. |

Yes, I agree with all of those comments, it's a lovely picture.
If I could just air my obsession, the small branch on the top left opposite the pipe (pole?) looks ripe for cloning out to me.... The pipes look like part of the building (albeit I don't know their purpose) so I'd leave them in. |

Everything abstract is taken from some source I think, so personally I think anything, even a natural beauty, is a valid starting point. I certainly wouldn't have know the source without your explanation. You guys do have some great sources!
I agree with John and Jerry, the peaks look blown to me, and recovering some detail there would improve it. However it's a nice satisfying abstract. |

Impact! You could use this image as a pictorial definition of the word, I think. I wonder why it put on that display if it is nesting? but I know nothing about egrets. I suppose I could say it's lacking in mid tones, but there are some mid tones there and the tone distribution is what gives it that impact. The sun is acting like a single spotlight, so maybe you need a side light, and a background light, and maybe a hair light..... but hey, that's nonsense, this is nature photography with attitude and I love it. |

One of the nice things about ths group is I get to learn a bit about America. Pemaquid was a word I didn't recognise, but now I know a bit about the many the lighthouses in Maine. Thanks for the pointer!
Back to the picture. Technically, all is super in my view, as usual, and a lovely picture. I've been debating with myself for some time as to whether I agree with the positive comments about the rocks. Generally here (I mean UK) a judge would condemn them for being a distraction on the periphery of the picture, detracting from the main subject. But I do agree with your comments, it does add balance. I do agree with cropping off some sky though, it doesn't add anything for me. This is leading me towards a letterbox crop, which actually I like as there's bags of interest in the buildings.
I know it's being really picky, but I don't like the flag crossing the chimney pot, but that sort of thing is so difficult to see at the moment of exposure. A lull in the wind would have helped.
Finally, the tree on the right edge. Some would say it forms a stopper to the eye drifting off to the right, whereas others would say it is another distraction on the edge. I think I would clone it out, as without it, the picture is more symmetrical and rounded. |
