Yes, I like those. I think the blurring on the second one is a teensy bit overdone, it does look false to me ie obviously not as captured by the camera. I'd leave a bit more space to the right of the boat at the end of the jetty. In the crop, the furthest boat is now a bit distracting; dare I suggest cloning it out? All to get a judgeworthy picture! ;-)
But I do agree with your comments on judges. They do tend to be biassed towards instant impact and to follow traditional lines of opinion, by and large. This forum (and I will join others next year if allowed to be in more than one)is really good for original comment without necessarily orthodox views, that's why I said both variants work fine for me. |

Thanks for your comments. I think I'll go back to this shop next time I go to 'the pool' and try again. I can wait for customers in different positions, indeed using burst mode I could track suitable subjects as they walk out and pick the best. Different focal lengths will be worth trying I think to alter the perspective. All being well it will be dry and maybe the doors will be open which will remove those issues. The image just grabbed me when I was walking around, but I didn't do the best job of it. |

I do agree, I take photographs to reflect my vision too, and often others see it differently. I was thinking I suppose of how a typical judge here would see it, but if taking the photo for personal interest and maybe a record for others as well, the present picture is probably best. I can wear either hat and still like the picture! |

Yes, I think the detail in the background competes with the lovely skin textures. If it were darkened I suspect the image would become too dark overall, so lightening it might be better? I'd lighten the eye too if possible. I've not got much sympathy for the "nature" rules, they lead to pictures that overall tend to be boring to me, so I like more creative images like this which just show an aspect of the beast. I'd put it into a different category and the "nature" lovers can miss out. |

I think there's lots of impact in this image due to the subject and careful post processing giving really good quality in my view. Pity about the butt - so difficult to spot things like that when deciding when to press the button! I try to remember to take a few of shots in situations subject to sudden change - hedging my bets! |

This is an odd image in my view. I find the horizontal line hard to understand, it seems lighter below the line as if it were two stitched images. I agree with Stan, a less acute viewpoint might be better, although the wooden posts on the right might spoil that. Perhaps take the picture from beyond the posts? As for the sky, I agree again - it doesn't seem to me to be appropiate in this image. |

I think the tone of this image is lovely. The general clarity and clear reflection draw the eye strongly. As a result, I too would crop out the top. I find simplicity in images usually trumps lots of detail unless that is the focal point, but here the boat is the attractive feature to me. |

I think this was a good spot, and it could have been a very good picture given a bit more luck. As Stan says, it's a pity the boat isn't a bit more interesting; whilst it's facing the "unknown", it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Had it been more interesting, I'd have removed the object on the sand bank to the right of the boat to preserve the nice leading lines. I like the letterbox cropping. |
