Yes, I guess so. I've never placed images in front of a panel, my comment related to club competitions with one judge. I'm doing the PSA "Image analysis" course at the moment, and the parameters we are to judge the exercises against are aimed at a "standard" image. I think the only parameter not so is "impact", and frankly that's often what draws me most to images I like. I don't think that impact means throwing away the rule book, but I think it does in many great images. So you're right, Stan, I just enjoy trying. |

Yes, quite a few times when listening to judges I've thought "No, you've missed the point!". I use Serif Affinity, but it has much the same controls as the Adobe products, so I'll give that a try. Thanks! |

Yes, it's easy to be an armchair critic! I'm glad you didn't take the risk. |

Tigers are nice to fly but don't take kindly to ham-fisted control! So, he insisted on having control for landing, take-off and the few aeros that we did, so he had control when this was taken. I have a PPL so he was happy with me controlling at other times. I've messed with this image quite a bit and liked the lightened background to emphasis the "eye". Alas I like the unusual. It has been in club competitions and not done well. So maybe I'll try again with a more normal histogram. |

I think this is an interesting image. I suspect you didn't expect it to be so close, you were fully zoomed out and still lost a bit of trunk. Such is nature photography, I think. I love the hairs on its lip - hard to believe this is a low px count image. The DoF is tight as you intended, but personally I find the blurred details, especially the foreground, quite distracting. Can't please everyone! |

Bridge cameras have a big DoF especially at lower focal lengths. Can be a real nuisance, but very convenient here as I don't think I had time to think much about it! |

Yes, a very satisfactory image. I must confess to being bored by most "milky water" pictures now, having seen so many, but this is unique in my experience, and very enjoyable. The contrast between the rocks and the spray is great, and I love the sense of anti-clockwise flow. I think it's well balanced and moving. Super, well done. |

I like the front to back flow of this, whereas John's flows mainly from side to side. Technically I can see no flaws and again it captures the feeling of vastness well. |

Yes, flying saucers in the forest! The contrast between natural and man-made is lovely. It seems to be nice and sharp. The lack of sky detail is good I think to add to the eerie feel.
I agree that a bit more contrast would make it bit more punchy, but otherwise I think it's fine as it is. |

Ah, my favourite, aeroplanes and great engineering. I have a 2m span 25cc petrol Stearman in my model collection - great flyer and bags of character!
I like the contrast between the regular, straight cooling fins and the fluidic reflections in the prop and spinner. Whilst I think there's lost detail in the shadows and highlights, to me it is quite acceptable and exactly what the eye sees in this situation. Your tight cropping emphasises the shapes and details for me, although it's still quite obvious what it is and not become an abstract. Great! |

Although I've never been there, I feel I know it as there must be millions of photos on the web of different parts of the Canyon. I like this image, simply because it manages to depict the vastness of the site. It has a lot of good attributes in my opinion, as mentioned above.
I wonder if it would be better if the whole of the river at the bottom of the image were included? You had mm to spare on your lens, and could have cropped to square to concentrate the view. |
