36 Jul 21 Comment My first comment is that I have something to learn about stopping the car when out travelling. So many times haven't I just seen a great scene and just passed by.

I like the composition, making the straws the main object. It is a challenge to achieve sharpens throughout the whole picture and avoid motion blur due to wind movement of the straws. I also like the change in colours that create a good depth of field.

36 Jul 21 Comment I agree with Larry that you have a great challenge in retrieving details from the dark original. My first impression was that the castle needed more light as it is the main object. Larry is into something, but to me the sun ray became a bit artificial.

I liked the lines created by the trees on both sides, leading up to the castle.

36 Jul 21 Comment It looks like it is taken from a western movie. The atmosphere is peaceful, but at the same time sad as you can see that this is from the past. Besides it is a beautiful and pleasing image, I think it is important to take pictures like this to document something that will be gone in not too many years.

My only suggestion is to use a slight vignette and may be highlight the house slightly and as commented before, darken the light area to the right.

36 Jul 21 Comment I love the image and love the story. Your efforts to make the perfect picture is something to learn from.

The reflections gave me some thoughts about religious symbolism in going up or going down, but may be that was not intended.

I have no comments for improvement.

36 Jul 21 Comment A very beautiful picture, Barbara. I liked the diagonal lines of the river that give energy to the picture. The exposure is just enough to give a nice blur of the water stream.

I don't understand the use of a graduated filter since the top is the lightest part.

My only suggestion for improvement is to make a vignette to make more focus on the river.

74 Jul 21 Reply Thank you for your comment, Bill. This is slow photography, indeed. I think I used about 5 hours on the post-processing and I did it over several days and redid it several times. It consists of about ten areas (masks) that are treated separately. Jul 20th
74 Jul 21 Comment A scene like this is very difficult to convey to others. The reason is that being there, you take in so many other impressions as well, like smell, atmosphere, other people applauding the place, that is not getting into the picture.

Having said that, I think you have done well in capturing the essence. My suggestion is to emphasise more on the blossoms by dodging with a luminosity mask to make them pop. I also suggest to crop the foreground and use a gradient filter to draw attention into the flowers. I am not sure, but may be also a slight gradient filter at the top would work.

74 Jul 21 Comment As most of your images, it is about emotions. It is not necessary to explain the man's mood. A thought that I most likely share with most others is how has he ended up in this situation. He seems to be a decent person who for unknown reasons has been unfortunate. The blurred person in the background emphasises the situation. He also looks unhappy, but not to the same degree.

I agree with Dick that some vignetting would make the picture (even) stronger.

74 Jul 21 Comment This is a minimalistic strong graphical composition. You have chosen the right camera point, all lines are vertikal or horisontal and with a few exceptions, the vertical lines are not overlapping. Jul 10th
74 Jul 21 Comment I agree with your thinking, Trevor, that there was an image in there. I also agree that the composition of the cropped image is better than the original. However, you have tried the impossible. The quality of such a hard cropping will never be good. I liked the tree and the surroundings, so if you have the chance to go back and reshoot the picture at the right distance, I think it can be a great picture. Jul 10th
74 Jul 21 Comment First, I will say that it is very positive that we can have such openminded discussions in the group. It is also good to see different versions of a scene. Even if there are rules in art, there is no right or wrong. In the discussion so far, I agree with Haru and disagree with Ata. In my opinion, your second version focuses much more on the main subject and less on the ground (foreground and background) and makes it more interesting. Personally, I would gone ever further in dodging and burning on the caves to make them even more dramatic or grotesque as you say it. Jul 10th
74 Jul 21 Reply Thank you for your nice comments. Regarding the reflections; I take the artistic liberty to make them where I feel they serve a purpose for the composition. In this case I wanted the highest contrast and focal point on the nearest window. Jul 7th
