Thanks Karen. Good images are all around us, if we can discover them. |

Yes, understood and sometimes having an animal or person in the foreground provides some perspective. |

Karen,
I agree; taking pictures of birds is very challenging and fun. It is great that you are relatively close to good bird photo ops. The most interesting bird images are those where the bird is active, like in flight, but those are especially difficult. Birds sitting are less difficult but still can be quite lovely, depending on the bird and surroundings. White birds are sometimes difficult because the feather detail can be lost in all that low contrast white.
You did well to catch this heron with its mouth open sitting in a well lighted spot. One of the questions with a still bird is how much of the surrounding to include. I understand why you selected the entire dead tree, but I think, under most circumstances, that the image is more about the bird than the tree, so I would normally recommend cropping in on the bird. Actually, zooming in given that you still had some focal length to use and then cropping in later in post as needed. Unfortunately, this image is a bit soft so cropping in won't work too well. |

Rita,
I think this is a very interesting street photo. I like that you captured the bridesmaids walking briskly which creates a dynamic image as the group moves forward. The orange walls and green doors provide a colorful background and suggest the southern location.
Suggestion - I would remove the pipe, if permitted by contest rules, that is rising out of the head of one of the bridesmaids. |

Diana,
Getting a good image of a family dog or cat is always a challenge -- many of the same challenges as with taking pictures of outdoor wildlife, but just confined to a smaller space and with a bit more docile animal. And some pet owners tend to think that their pet is always "cute" no matter what the image conveys.
I think you did well and you did it one-handed. You captured your cat doing something active and "fun"; removed background distractions; the image is sharp throughout; and the background is soft. The image might be a bit more attractive if both eyes were fully visible. |

Anne,
Back injuries are not fun. I hope you feel better soon and can start taking pictures again. |

Anne,
I think this was the image you submitted too late for including in January, so I put it in for February. I may have lost your description.
I like the bold colors and contrast between the red leaves and the dark blues of the grapes. The leaves frame a window into the grapes, which is a well selected composition feature. This is a pleasing pastoral image. |

Ranmali,
Welcome to our Group and thanks for your timely submission.
I like the high clouds, the long curved leading line of the beach, and the splashing waves. To me, that landscape is the subject of this image. Without seeing the original color image I can't compare the color/BW treatment, but I do think this image works well as a BW.
The dog (yours?) in the lower left of this image is not the subject for a variety of reasons rather, in this image it is a distraction. This would be a more compelling image without the dog, even though it looks like a nice dog. |

Diane,
It is difficult for me to discern much detail in this image - a bit dark and soft. I expect you were quite far away and without a tripod. |

I probably like the original better (with a bit of crop) but both are good. It is nice to have a bird spotter. |

I kept tripping over these rocks; maybe that is why I cropped them out. Low resolution. |
