Diana,
I also like that you caught the moment when they were both announcing themselves; maybe siblings? I would not do a crop where their bodies are truncated near the last third. I would either crop in tighter on their heads and neck area or keep the entire body. I think I like the color of the original a bit more than the b/w conversion. |

You will need to check the contest rules for the contest you enter but if sky replacement is not allowed, which is the usual case, it won't matter if is your image or some other.
Which category you enter will depend on the contest. Often there is a category that include transportation, machines, devices, etc.
I think the color shift is not a big deal, especially when there will be only one image to view. You can increase the saturation bit or selectively affect only that color in LR.
You can darken a blown out sky but it just ends up making it gray, so sky replacement works well, but not for most contests. One option is to crop in on the car and get rid of all the sky in the cropped image. See attached as a possible example.

Rita,
As you know, I have taken zillions of images of classic cars. And you definitely choose a well admired classic Jag. I like the perspective, down low looking up a bit - it emphasizes the grill, headlights and nameplate. One challenge with images of classic cars is that the surrounding often intrude on the car - I can't decide if this is the case with this photo. So I often end up taking closer images of parts or sections of the car. In your original, the sky was blown out so adding a sky is an improvement although may not be allowed in many contests. I think there is a pretty noticeable color shift in the color of the car from original to edit, probably because the original version is darker. I agree with Rita that this wouldn't be a good entry for still life. |

There are lots of eye interesting aspects of this image - the faded and contrasting colors, the texture, the curved vertical lines. The screw adds a bit of asymmetry, which also adds interest. I wouldn't remove the lettering since it is not distracting (to me) and provides a bit of context. |

Kyle,
I like your crop. Everything seems in focus. Lots of interesting patterns, contrast, and texture. Good catch getting the tongue out. |

Thanks Anne. I think I would have to be there to completely understand the image but it is definitely interesting and impactful. |

Denny,
I have seen many images of rocket launches. This is definitely one of the best. I like that you captured the tail moving across horizontally and the cactus in the foreground, which moves the viewer's eye upward toward the launch and provides a striking silhouette. Super photo. |

Yes, I agree. A very interesting image which many people might pass by and not really notice. I don't understand which are the mirrors - the ovals? What are they mounted on? Where were you standing - inside or outside of the salon? |

It never seems right that the best moon exposure is essentially a daylight exposure but that's what works. And not what most light meters will indicate. |

Yes, probably motion since the flower looks to be in focus. |

Actually, this photo was taken just west of Austin, TX so that may explain the orientation since I didn't rotate it.
It is easy to over exposure a moon image because the light meter doesn't measure well in the very bright/very dark situation.
Sometime I bracket and sometimes I take an exposure, view it, and then adjust until I get what appears OK to my eye. I did the later on this one.
I messed around with the original raw file a bit, per your suggestions. I think it is better. |

Diane,
I am sure this would be an interesting action image if you could have zoomed in or gotten closer. |

Lovely sharp image with soft background. I would consider cropping in and eliminating some of the space, especially above. |

Who doesn't like a mama Gorilla and her baby. I would have liked to have seen the original image. There is so much darkness in this image that I would consider cropping in to get more of the lighter facial features of mother and baby. |

It is always amazing to catch a hummer in flight and you have two of different types. The larger one on the right is in better focus. At first I thought the red object was a bird feeder; now I see it is a quite vibrant flower. Lovely soft background. You have to be quick and ready to get an image like this. |
