As noted, nice capture of birds with a busy background. That's the challenge with animal/nature shots -- you only have a second to get the pic and whatever background there is what you get. Some retouching in post can help but the "true" nature folks don't like many alterations to the original. |

Nice contrast of black and white feathers and pattern. Why not just make the photo b/w; that also would help to reduce the brownish distracting background area. |

Black rhinos in bw -- makes sense. I agree that the background is a bit washed out but it does provide good foreground/background separation from the main subjects (rhino and tree). I might try a bit of a gradient to darken the foreground grass. |

Here it is with more detail in the shadows. Looks better? |

I think there actually is more detail available in the dark foreground. I'll see what a revised photo looks like with more of the shadow detail brought forward. |

Mervyn,
A sleepless night for you. You captured the galactic core nicely and even included a shooting star.
I am no expert but my limited experience indicates that typically a reasonably fast wide angle lens is used at the widest aperture possible (2.8 on my 10 - 30 mm lens). That allows a shorter exposure with lower ISO, although your 20 - 30 secs was within the typical range. Also, often I take two exposures -- one for the foreground and one for the stars and then merge. Best to experiment and see what works that night. |
