Well congrats Elizabeth! It is always fun to be recognized and asked to share with another audience. I really like the gesture of the tree along with the diagonals of the dark sand and the puddles in the middle. we all struggle with bald skies like this but I would look at this wonderful tree and think what can I do. If we feel that the gesture of the tree is right to left, then we want to leave some space for that gesture to lead to but that just adds more sky. Does the sense of distance/loneliness of the beach off to the left counter the sky enough? Another image from this scene might be to look at the taller part of the tree as a bow and the lower branch facing right as the important gesture pointing to the right.
Then you could crop a lot of the left side of image, thus reducing the impact of the sky. I held a piece of paper on the image above passing through the p and r of April. What do you think? It is a different image of course and does not have the same feeling of desolation. |

I can see why you loved this scene. I really like the greens and yellows, the texture in the ancient ruins as well as how you balance the image with the ruin on the left and the tree on the right. The pano works well with this flock of sheep spread along the meadow. I also like tyhe tips of the bushes in the foreground as that along with the wall and tree behind the sheep create an enclosure to my eye. In my opinion, the sky and buildings do not add much. Perhaps darkening the sky and the houses in the background would give a different feel. |

I agree with Marilyn about the "C" curve of the creek and the simplicity of the image. I think that the snow is looking grey suggesting that the image is under exposed. Did you compensate for your meter trying to make the snow 18% grey? That could account for your image looking 1 stop + underexposed. |

Good Morning Bob,
I spend a lot of time in Maine and also see scenes like this with a shaft of light working its way into the woods and as you have noted, I also feel a lot of inspiration from such scenes. My attached image is a different interpretation in that the inspiration that I get is from the shaft of light and the contrast between the deep greens of our forests and the lighter yellows from the shaft of light. Therefore, in my interpretation, I want the shaft to be the subject and have been more aggressive in the burning of the surrounding forest, have changed the hue of the greens around the forest floor and sharpened the image a little. Different interpretations of a great scene and mood. Nice job. |
