Thanks Mary! The Lensbaby Velvet lens, both 56 and 85 do add a certain character to an image when using the smaller apertures. I know they are typically praised for their "glow-like" effects at larger apertures, but I really like the results at the small end as well. Plus the close focusing distance so that you can really fill the frame. |

I like this composition and how the branch and leaves drape down from the left top and into the frame making a nice composition. That movement felt to me like it could be more delicate and soft, even though I'm sure these leaves were actually crisp in texture. Like Georgianne, I thought a darker background would help make the leaves stand out but I also liked the green from the tree needles and didn't want to lose them. So I played with this using the following edits:
In Lightroom I masked the background and reduced the exposure.
In Topaz Studio 2 I used two filters, Abstraction and Smudge. I made adjustments to each filter to soften the textures but not lose them completely and add a kind of smoothness to the overall image.
Nice job capturing this composition and light on this scene.

What a wonderful story about this family. I really like how you posed them and made sure to show the Dad holding his daughter's hands. This exudes happiness and love in my opinion.
The only suggestions I have for the edits is maybe to lighten the shadow under the brim of his hat a bit. On my monitor it looks really dark, a little too black.
Also, the hairs on each side of the girl's forehead have turned a solid grayish color and look more like something painted rather than strands of hair in my opinion. Maybe if you went into Photoshop and used a brush to paint a little more hair texture there it would help with that.
Great story and great capture of this sweet moment together.

This looks like a beautiful place to visit Georgianne. Your edits definitely brought life to a rather dull day. I really like what you did to the clouds because it still helps tell the story of an overcast, possibly cool day.
I also like the composition and how you captured the big rock out in the water with a good balance of separation from the mound of rocks on the left. One tiny thing I did notice was it looks like the corner of a structure or something, is jutting into the frame from the left. Almost the middle of the photo and is light blue. I think that should be taken out. Otherwise, This is a lovely scene to look at. |

I really like this image Carol. The color tones are very soothing and the positioning of the birds makes this interesting to look at. Are they dancing, are they spying some dinner down below, are they seeking out a quiet place to land? Beautiful job. |

Rita - this tells a story very clearly. It's a wonderfully sweet image and with your processing the first thing I thought (like Georgianne) was "Norman Rockwell". I haven't entered any PSA contests, but I don't know why this wouldn't fit the bill in the people category.
Well done! |
