70 Jan 17 Reply Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I knew about the Ephemeris, but have not yet played with it.

Your other helpful ideas about other facets are valuable for me, going forward.

Your comment made me think that landscape photography is more challenging than one might think initially. After all, mountains do not move; rivers (usually) stay in their banks; the sea and sky remain (usually) in their same locations; and flowers and plants change slowly as they proceed through their life cycles. However, the sun, and therefore light, does move and change; people may be coming and going; my mood can change; and the camera and its location and orientation can easily change.

Therefore, sorting through all these "constant and non - constant variables" can be daunting.

Nonetheless, the landscape photographer's challenge is to create the image at the optimum time and location, given all that is happening.

70 Jan 17 Comment It seems to me that this image is an example of "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade." In other words, a blah sunset can be made into a gorgeous image.

Another initial thought was crop the bottom somewhat. However, doing so would not be helpful and would, probably, be distracting to the story I see and note below.

I am reminded of my time in the Navy at sea by the undulating mountains and changing colors from dark blue to yellow/gold.

The story I get, though, is "go to the light," "there is victory ahead," or "I can see the finish line." I like the way challenges me to get and to keep moving in a positive direction toward my goals.

Thanks for sharing the image.

70 Jan 17 Comment My initial response was "I need to get to the Palouse."

I like the image and its composition. I found the trees to be a nice -- and surprising -- break from the undulations and curves. I was actually reminded of my time at sea when I was in the Navy.

I wonder if the shadows and distance could be a little blacker. I do not like too much background haze, especially in my images -- but I live on Earth.

I am a "realistic" type person; I want my image to show what I saw. Therefore, on the your processing point, the image does not seem overprocessed to me. However, I was not there, so I do not know what it looks like. Only you can say if it shows what you want to show and/or what it looks like.

70 Jan 17 Comment I like the image's color and line variations.

To me, the amount of water in the falling stream and the amount of "activity" in the pool do not seem directly related enough. In other words, it seems as if there is too much action in the pool for the amount of water in the stream (which is a mist or haze). Just a thought.

70 Jan 17 Comment Well done and mission accomplished! You reminded me of the reason I have no interest in going north in the winter. In addition, I hate cold and this image made me cold just by looking at it. Congratulations!

I like the entirety of the image and would be reluctant to crop too much on the left. However, you might consider cropping a little on the left (to a point near the bushes) and a little on the bottom (to the point above the line in the sidewalk concrete). Just a thought.

70 Jan 17 Comment How thoroughly delightful!

I like the composition, especially the varying textures (clouds, branches, lake, mountains).

I love blue; so the dark colors are personally a little ominous. However, well done. I love sunrises and sunsets, no matter what the colors are.

70 Jan 17 Reply Judy, thank you for your thoughtful reply.

As you can imagine, the light was changing very rapidly and I was happy to have this opportunity.

I have another image with the moon at 210mm. I did not choose it because the image was simply moon; there was no size referent.

I like your idea concerning getting low and shooting up. This image was made on a tripod in a "standing height" position.

I agree with you that size referent is very important in this image.

Thank you for your insight about the sky; the light was changing very quickly and I was happy to have these colors.

I have other images that do not tell the story as well as this one does.

I agree with your idea that the humans are not needed to tell the story, but they are valuable for size. Without them, size becomes hard to tell because trees' sizes can vary so dramatically and the cannon is not an "every day" object for most people. I really debated with myself about this image for just this size reason, but decided to use this image because I really wanted to show the moon meaningfully.
