Thanks. That is just what I thought. I'm not offended. I have better shots but was just reacting to the feedback. Appreciate the honesty! |

BTW - I have no problems if you tell me it is not an Exhibition level image. The truth is the best feedback. Thanks |

I'll, thanks for the good suggestions. Now a Q for you. As a PSA judge do you think that this image has any real chance of acceptance in a PSA Exhibition? I originally didn't think so but the comments have been very positive. So I thought I'd get your qualified opinion. Thanks for any feedback you can give. |

Ian, I like the setting for this image and it seems to me that you have shared other images of this waterway in the past - but I could be wrong. It is very enjoyable and pleasing to my eye to look art.
Using just LR Classic masks I selected the sky and then intersected it with a linear gradient to get just the lightest portion of the sky. I reduced the exposure there, increased the contrast and saturation. AS with Isaac's input I lightened the water, but also cropped down a bit further in 11" x 14" format to remove some dead space and get the nearest bait on the 1/3 point. I then used the "Select Subject" mask to choose the three boats and added some brightness and saturation.
Tell me what you think, |

Guy I always like an image with strong "shape" in the composition and this image does that very well. The image is sharp and the many lines draw my eye into the frame and hold it there.
It is also then intriguing to my eye in monochrome. In the VF I did a conversion in LR Classic and chose a high contrast preset. I then went into the portions with reflected sky and dropped the contrast back down to get some "moodiness." I don't think I improved on your image but just created another perspective. |

To me the post-processed version of the image is well composed. Left to right the image is strikingly different but to my eye very much in balance. For me I also like the HDR effect on the buildings on the right. I feel that the extension of the flowers in the lower right also add color and balance.
For me the sky, especially mid-right side is a bit too oversaturated. Upon close inspection also the angle of the light in the replacement sky is off a bit from the direct side-lighting (shadow on the trash can in the original image) striking the sculpture. But knowing you judge competitions I will leave it to you to access if this would have been called out.
Overall a very nice image and very pleasing to look at. Thanks for sharing. Hope all is well with you. We missed you at the photo festival. |

To my eye the image is tack sharp and nicely exposed. It seems to me that skeletons peering out of the windows below might have been even more intriguing! |

Erik, this is a very unique capture for this location. I think your patience and timing both worked in your favor. For me the smoke around his head and the "thermal" bottle at his feet help to tell a story. From what you have said these show me that in this modern day a wise man is remembering his ancestors and times past. (We should all do this more, I feel.)
To my eye the blue of his shoes, the red cap and the orange in the "wrap" under the hat add to the image. From my experience I am wondering if lightening his shadow on the post and rock a bit might make less likely to draw the viewer's eye away from him. Good find! |

Vella, to my eye you have done something very rare here - you have done a major crop on an image and yet made it more interesting. To my eye you have done an excellent job retaining the edges on the old man's head - hair, ears and collar - all the while resetting the background to black. For me the revised image tells a story. I feel that his deep-set pondering eyes and the white stubble of the beard says that he has seen and weathered much and has wisdom to show for it. You have told a story to me nicely. Thanks. |
