Bill, thanks for your comment. I went back and checked (and ultimately upgraded) the image. Although the whites were not blown out on the TIF file (per the histogram) the detail was missing. Attached has the detail laid back in and the brightness of the shirt pulled back a touch. |

Bill, thanks for sharing yet another church image. As you know this is one of my favorite subjects and I always admire good work. For me symmetry is everything and you have done a superb job in that regard. From my experience I am also awed by the way you have captured the detail in the ceiling structure. Well done. The contrast and sharpness also capture my eye.
I am always looking other's insights so I ask this question - Did you give any thought to cloning in a darker version of the two small windows at the top of the front wall? Obviously you preferred the points of light that they add. Just wondering how you made that decision. Thanks. |

Val, to my eye you have made a good choice of camera settings for capturing this image. I like the sharpness of the rocks and flora. To me the 1/8 second shutter speed gives a nice look to the flowing water. The color, contrast and brightness yield a very realistic look to the viewer's eye.
I think that the left to right flow of the water helps to draw in the "western" viewer's eye to the core of the picture. From my experience the area for improvement is the composition at the top of the falls. To me the cropping is too tight. I believe that even a small strip of background (as was seen in the kayakers picture in the July DD4 images) would be helpful to the overall composition. |

Well, I will add a second "new to Me." I like the result that you achieved and now am anxious to try it myself. Clearly this is not winter as it might appear at first glance. Why not mask the people on the pier from the treatment and bring them back to look realistic. I feel this might add to the image. |

Erik, your patience has paid off. The wait has produced, in my opinion, a "story-telling" moment. Having been there several times I can say that I feel what it took in patience and time to get this composition. Well done!
To me the image appears razor sharp. I think the depth of field with the softer background helps to emphasize the birds as well. The colors of the birds and the water and vegetation work in harmony and add to the image.
From my experience it seems that the beaks of the Gallinule are more red than they appear here. It leaves me wondering if the more orange appearance is an artifact of the bright sunlight. I feel that the chicks might stand out a bit more if the background were less brilliant. In the VF I put the image into On1 Photo Raw Effects and used a very quickly done luminosity filter to mask the birds and bring down the highlights. |

Ian, as others have said and to my eye as well, the lighting in this image is spectacular. I feel that the strip on land also adds to the image to provide a background and to add perspective to the size of the cruise ship. I will look forward to seeing the lighthouse image next month. |

Isaac, I love the action in each of these pictures. Given the limitations you stated I feel that you did a great job in capture of getting the sharpness, depth of field and eye contact that you achieved. I am also amazed at the age and conditioning of this Kiteboard surfer relative to the others you photographed. Thanks for sharing |

Marie, would you at some point be interested In collaborating on an article for the PSA journal on the waterfalls of upstate New York. I have, and I'm guessing you also have, shot a wide variety from large to small. Let me know. Thanks. |

Marie, this image excites me for two reasons - it is well done and it is a falls in upstate New York that I was not yet familiar with.
I think that you have done an excellent job with composition - the flow from right to left and back to right pulls this viewer's eye into the heart of the picture and holds it there. I feel that the skylight filter has yielded very natural colors making the image very realistic.
Always wanting to compare notes I am wondering if you also shoot the falls at any faster shutter speeds to yield less smoothness in the flowing water. For me I struggle sometimes with what is the "most pleasing" look. Would appreciate your thoughts.
Nice Job! |
