Scott, I believe that you have done a good job in Capture and Post with the Color of the scene, the DoF and the contrast. To my eye you have done a good job of matching a sky with a scape and getting consistent light direction. I feel that the birds are a good add to the picture. Great "post" work.
From my experience - and what I have read - viewers seem to prefer groups in odd numbers - so is there a way to get rid of the far left stack. Also I think that the breaking wave in the foreground is a distraction.
I have seen this scene shot from this angle and high tide many times. Did you consider a low tide shot with the beach exposed? |

Rajani, I love your images and am amazed at how much of the world you have seen and photographed. I believe that Trey has made all the right comments and hit the key points.
My experience is that I have very rarely been satisfied with my own attempts at sky replacement. The only two examples I felt were acceptable to my standards was when I went back and re-shot the sky from the same location and replaced the original.

Wow! I really like this image. To my eye the contrasting Blacks and Whites really make this image jump off of the page. To me the way you have presented the reflection in the water adds to the quality of the image.
For me this is way outside my area of expertise. I really tried to absorb your instructions but so much is new to me. I was wondering of you would be willing to do a call at some point and explain this to me in some greater detail.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for sharing. |

Charles, I believe that your composite has well captured one of the "Vast Landscapes" that you and many others (self included) love to imagine. For me this brings back memories of my own visit to Denali.
To my eye however that you have given up too much to get the bright midground emphasis. I feel that you have lost details in the far hills and lost a beautiful foreground altogether.
In the VF I took the image into DxO Color Efex Pro 4 and used the Reflector Efex to place a Soft Gold Light on the entire image and direct that light to match the original angle. I also used Detail Extractor to bring out foreground detail and ble to sky more to your liking. I then put the image back into LR where I used a foreground mask to darken the FG so that it did not compete with the midground. I then cropped it to approximate your final. Here is what I got.
Would be interested in your comments. |

From my experience you have done an excellent job in capture - using the 16mm focal length to get as much exposure as possible without star trails. I feel that the colors you have created for this image - the red fence the blue night sky and the white lighthouse work in harmony - somewhat "patriotic."
To my eye the DoF with an f/2.8 stop has left the fence in the foreground slightly out of focus. In this case I believe this is a very minor distraction to the image. Perhaps you could have shot the same scene focused on the fence and layer stacked to obtain a crisper foreground.
Very Nice! |

Lou, to me this is an outstanding image. I feel that the color tone is realistic to the viewer's eye. For me the lines of the breaking waves leads my eye into the image and holds it there. In my opinion the background clouds provide the right amount of detail to add to the image but not take away from the main theme. From my experience I wondered if the thin cloud layer in front of the hills should have a wee bit more blue - but nothing I tried could improve on your image. Well done! |
