Welcome to the group, John. A lovely image and so well done. It's amazing that ISO 5000 would work so well!
Suggestions,
I would love to see the tree not centered, but perhaps a little more to the right, so that it connects with the sweep of the milky way. Were you able to move your location a bit that night? Did you try other positions of the large tree? Do you live near here? I am headed to Utah in May and hope to capture some night skys. My tries here were thwarted by cloudy skies in Washington State. |

Hi Mike, lovely image and lovely find. I think this could be quite striking in black and white as the white frosty grass contrasts so much with the background, which is not frosty. I think having everything in shades of white, gray and black would unify the photo, as well as being very classic and Ansel Adams-y. I too like the trees on the right, and they are already pretty monotone, so that 1/3 of the photo is monotone already. I saw go all the way, all in. |

Wow, looks like you were in a helicopter taking this shot!
I also think cropping some of the brown at the bottom would be nice to focus me in on the greens and the waterfalls. The figure gives it scale, I missed him as he is so tiny until I read the other comments. Then its hard to miss him.
Amazing details and not even HDR. quite lovely. |

I agree that it is a soft, calming scene, Virginia.
I would try cropping some of the sky out to make it less split in half. I would like to see what it would look like flipped horizontally, with the clump of grass on the left side, leading me into the photo. It might not work at all that way, but playing around you can decide yourself. Tricky because there are the fences, the boats on the left, and the mountains on the right side.
I think you could also do a vertical crop to just 1/3 of the photo, choosing the left 1/3, with the fence, boats and sun. That looks pretty cool to me. (and some of the bottom cropped too. I tried to do an edit to show you but couldn't figure out how to do that) |

Wow, Mike really gave a great description of you image. I don't mind the vignette either, but would like the middle of the sky to have more detail. The brightness with no detail draws my eye out of the photo.
A neutral density filter might do that, does snapchat have that option? i am not familiar with the program.
Amazing to get this on your phone. I love the reflections in the water. |

Photographers live dangerous lives!! We lose track of traffic and cliffs and other hazards in pursuit of beauty.
I'm not bothered by the saturation myself, and see a beautiful image here. In trying to add helpful suggestions I thought that the crack in the rocks, with the tree growing up through the cracks, was very intriguing, and a great leading line to the mountains in the background. I wondered if moving left could place that crease so it really leads me into the background, and loose that tree on the right because you have moved left. Perhaps even a verticle shot with that crease leading me back. Nice to get some clouds in the sky. Nice capture, glad you didn't get nailed by a car! |

Thanks John, and welcome to our group. I will check out monotone after the Holidays are over, if I remember. |

I see what you mean, Mike. I didn't see how bright the center was until you mentioned it. Very bright, I wonder if I even can make it darker. When I get a moment after Christmas I can play with it. thanks. |

Thanks Marla, I like both your colored one and the black and white. I don't know if its worthy either. Sometimes I love something that doesn't get much feedback, and am surprised when I enter something I think isn't that great and it gets high scores. Sigh. |
