Hi Palli,
Wonderfully seen! A perfect blend of living and inanimate for an IR composition. Bold blacks and whites. I took liberty to modestly straighten the rotunda structure, then I cropped it ever so slightly. To my eye, there is a bit too much foreground. The center of the structure is now precisely on the lower right hand intersection of the thirds in the composition...a strength point. See what you think of the adjusted version I have prepared. |

Melanie,
Add me to the list of those who love the old and dilapidated! What a great subject for the use of IR. I enjoy your composition very much, the framing with the overgrowth, and the bold whites and blacks. My one constructive critique is that, to my eye, the image is not tack sharp. I masked off the center of the image including much of the building and sharpened it selectively with Topaz Detail. Of course on an image of this resolution, it will hardly show, but you might want to consider doing this to your master file. |

Hi Craig,
I like it very much...the toning is excellent. If anything, I might add a dash of contrast, but consider than a minor point/suggestion. Wonderful use of IR of the living subject against the inanimate.

Hi Jack,
Without knowing what Palli was doing, I took a whole different tact with your image. Such is the joy of infrared and the many options we have with the medium! I masked/lightened/gave contrast and detail to the foreground, then I used a split neutral-density filter (NIK Color Efex Pro Split ND) in the sky area to make it dark and brooding. For me, the foreground is now the main subject. As did Palli, I had to clone in some cloud to take out those hot spots in your sky. What do you think? |

Thanks for commenting Palli. I would hope the enormity of the trees against the black sky would allow one's eye to pass the octagonal sign, which is also partially shaded...but it's a very valid and notable critique. Yes, I wanted this in the scene...does it disrupt too much? We shall only know if it's entered in competition! |
