Thanks, Sunil. I feel the same way, but since several suggested I have people in it, I thought I would give it a try. Good point about the conductors.
Our conductors did stand outside, but of course, that was because the trains were going forward and back for photo ops. The conductors made sure we didn't get too close to the tracks or crossings. |

PSA has dozens of classes on their website. They are all free to members. They are all very good and very intense, with homework and critiques. I learned a lot with several of the instructors. They also have monthly Zoom classes for members, and those are always interesting. They are recorded and you can see them on the website also. |

I like this a lot, Ed. You and Sunil have offered some lovely interpretations of Jean's scene. |

I've added an image below with a train conductor at the crossing, what do you think? |

Thanks, Guru of Black and White! I have added a train conductor in my image below, since almost all thought the pic needed people. Do you think it adds? I always appreciate your feedback. |

I had some suggestions to have people in the image. I've added a conductor, in authentic clothes, that I photographed elsewhere on the same train trip. I don't think he shows up enough or fits into the image enough?
This version also has a lot of grain in it and I'd need to clean up the halos around the edges, but wanted everyone's thoughts before I did more work for an image that I don't think is any stronger. Your thoughts? Thanks! |

Sorry if I didn't label things properly, Ed!
I agree Original (not 2) is a superior image. And I agree more contrast would help the monochrome version. Sunil is traveling, back March 18 and we may see the perfect version then, as he's so good at b/w!
We are going to be out in Colorado in September on an 11 state driving tour and I'm going to add this to my shot list! I love state capitols! Beautifully captured! |

My contribution was the same as Ed's... no need for a snow fence and blue plastic chairs!
I do like the suggestion of landscape, if you have it (we don't see the original).
Going on Ed's "quiet" version, I'd be tempted to thin some branches encroaching on the scene.
A lovely moment, for sure! So hard to get snow and fog to look the way we see them. Bravo! |

Wow, what a beautiful scene!! And congrats on trying more drone photography! I do like Ed's version with the greens down a bit, as I did find your version difficult to determine everything going on. I think that's why Jean went with a strong vignette and Robert suggested cropping the image down dramatically.
So glad you are have some amazing photography experiences! |

Yay for you to take a PSA class! And yay for you for trying Macro!
For me, the original seems more in focus and the green leaf shows up nicely, giving me a perspective in what I'm looking at, as compared to the finished image. No one has mentioned that, so maybe I'm off about my feedback.
I've done limited macro. So far, I've found it's tough to do macro handheld. And I think Ed's idea of focus stacking would make a big difference in the quality of your image. Many cameras have built in focus stacking, which does all the work for you.
I'd love to see the version you mentioned to Jean and any others you took that you would like to share! Kudos for a big experiment! |

I thought I might have posted someone else's image by mistake, since we rarely see a color image from you ;-). I think this would make a great black and white, since your subject is already black and white.
I think Jean's idea of slightly less crunchy grass and a shade lighter would enhance the feeling of an African plain. On my screen, the big tree on the left seems a tad crunchy and might look nice whiter to match nicely with our zebra.
Thanks for the info on this safari in Dallas! |

Nice scene, Jean! To me, the blacks seem a little blocked up (similar to what Robert shared about more brightness, but I would lower the blacks in the buildings).
There's just a bit of halos around the top of the buildings, which is usually an effect of a contrasty image. Here's a quick video on a quick fix so you don't have the white outlines on the top of the buildings.
Sunil is a master of monochrome and I'd do with whatever he suggests.
I think its a nice city scape, a great sky and the water doesn't add a lot, so I'll be interested in what fixes you might use to enhance it. It's possible that there might be too many clouds, but we'll see what others think. |

Interesting that you and Robert both think the two tripod photographers would help the image. I'd like it to look historic, so photographers with tripods in current dress seem to take away from the photo, especially with one guy facing away? How do you see the photographers helping the image?
Thanks in advance for your additional thoughts. |
