Thanks, Robert, I've added more light on the right hand side and a bit more across the top. I think that your idea improved it!

I added the bar that holds the lamp up, as suggested by you. I think it does look a LOT better. Does it look realistic? Any additional changes to make the lamp/bar look better or anything else? Thanks! |

Jim, I kept the lamp, as I felt it was part of the old age of the image. Do you like my latest rendition fixing the lamp? |

Whew! Just made it to Florida with our stuff for six months and have my computer set up.
I redid my Lord of the Rings Door. I watched a lot of videos on how to light a lantern or lamp--there are millions--but they all use a whole series of presets in Photoshop on lighting lamps, the sun, etc and they have recently been removed from Photoshop!
So I followed a few videos and made a few moves of my own. I did darken everything so it was more scary and a lit lantern made more sense, and then I lit the lamp. I think the light falls in a believable pattern, don't you? |

Pei-Fan, to be in Travel it depends if you removed anything from the original image and if it still looks the same. Here are the Travel rules (and all other PSA rules). When you pick a PSA competition, you must also look at the rules for that competition, as they often have specific size requirements and other local rules that must be followed.
For example, if you asked three farmers to walk into the field, that is a "set-up" and can not be entered in Travel. It can be entered in Color.
https://psa-photo.org/page/division-definitions
They also have rules for judges (very helpful for competitors) in simplified Chinese, if that is even more helpful.
https://psa-photo.org/page/photo-travel
An easy way to start competing with PSA is their Facebook page. Simple rules--no AI and all parts of photo must be your own, you can only enter one image per day-- and there is no cost. You do not even need to be a PSA member. Rules are pinned at the top of the link below:

Hi Pei-Fan, thanks for your suggestion. There are lots of videos on how to light a lamp and have it look realistic.
We are driving cross-country right now to our place in Florida. As soon as we are settled, I plan to redo my lamp to have a stronger image to compete with. |

Thanks a million, Jim. I really love the lamp, but I'm going to work on it and see if I can't make it fit into the image more realistically. Thanks! |

Ed, you always have the most interesting images! I do like your increase of yellow flowers and fixing the warp and bringing us closer.
I do like Robert's suggestion of greening up the plants, but I don't like the greenish railings. I think choosing Object Aware and Subtract the railings. Or a brush would do the trick.
Great leading lines with the railings and nice subject! Your wife? |

I've moved to using my iPhone, too! I just did a three week Europe tour with just my iPhone. It was so fun and freeing. I'm going to take more classes to get even better with my iphone.
This is the first flower image of yours that feels a little "crunchy" and the petals don't appear soft. Would that be something that can be adjusted in your processing?
I found your burgundy center to match a couple of Rose of Sharon trees we have, where I've not seen one with the brighter center that Ed suggested.
The stem blurred and just disappearing is a bit disturbing, I'm not sure if you can show a bit more of the stem, so its not hanging in space?
I do love the white/red/green and a touch of yellow stamen...I think with a few tweeks, it could be even stronger and more beautiful. |

Great image! And I love the three people walking, which gives us a perspective on how big the rice fields are. Beautifully processed.
If you aren't going to compete with it, I'd remove the little distracting white box to the left of the shack (house?), but removing it would make this image not eligible for "Travel", as it is a reality based category.
Love it! |

I think this is a very fun pic and a big jump from your normal pix--good for you to move out of your comfort zone!
I immediately thought of the Barbie movie, too! I also thought of "Hairspray", the Broadway play, and perhaps "Hairspray" is a potential title, as it wouldn't be copyright protected, like title with the word, "Barbie".
I think the pic is processed beautifully and I couldn't find anything to suggest. Super fun! |

Wow, what a cool thing! I can't even imagine how steam would work in a clock!
I really like the look of the clock. I didn't even notice the steam. With the steam not being obvious, it does weaken your "steam" story, in my opinion. Sadly, I don't have any suggestions to make the steam work better in the image, since the steam spouts are cropped with the straightening.
Perhaps someone else will have a good idea to draw our eye to the wild steam spouts! |

Good suggestions, Robert. Good catch that I removed the entire lamp--I worked on my laptop--bad idea! I'll fix that.
I definitely need to get the lamp figured out and will work to improve its look (per Ed) and where the light adds shadows. |

Just to be clear--PSA only allows sky replacements if it is your sky. In a composite image, all parts must be the photographer's. You cannot compete with using anyone else's sky, background, etc.
Personally, I love the creativity of changing the feel of an image changing the sky, merging images, etc. But I understand and respect that some don't like anything that is not "pure". |

Thanks, Ed! I wasn't thrilled with my lamp, either. I'll see what others suggest and then see if YouTube has some better suggestions after everyone has weighed in with their overall comments.
Thanks for getting us started on critiques this month! |
