Thanks, Jacob. I want to give the "spaghetti" enough room, but could definitely crop up a tad. |

Thanks so much for all the info on your process. I'm trying to develop a "Candy Brain" in my photography. |

Hi Candy, thanks, I'll open the face. In PSA Nature, you are not allowed to use vignettes, or in any reality-based competitions. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks so much, Geoff! Osprey are quite abundant throughout the US, but I would say it was unusual to see one in a tree with a fish.

Geoff, Oh, I would LOVE to see these birds! Spectacular! And good for you to stop the action and have a clean background.
If you use Lightroom or Photoshop, they have a "select subject" option. You can drop highlights and open shadows. You can then invert it and darken the background, as well as drop clarity to blur the water further (if you'd like). I'd love to see the branch a bit lighter, and you could select just the branch and bring up the exposure. Finally, the radial gradient on the eye area can saturate a bit of yellow to the eye and bring out the face. This could be quite the winner!
Were you on shore or in a boat? Incredible! |

Jacob,
I agree with Dena, the photo is nice, but we really need complete tonality from pure white to pure black in most monochrome images.
What are you using for your processing on your iphone? If you download the free SnapSeed and watch a couple of videos and you'll be winning competitions with your phone.
This has potential, just work on your tonal range a tad and you'll have a winner.

What? Pied billed grebes have purple and navy in their mouth? How wild is that?!
We have an "Adorable" category coming up in our local photo club, and this would be a fabulous entry.
A couple questions for me to learn from your choices: the head reflection is cropped off a bit, what was your reasoning, as I'm sure you planned that?
What are the two dark lines trailing the grebe? I thought they were a bit distracting, but are you using them as leading lines?
What was your trick to create blue water and keep your bird brown and his reflection brown? Thanks in advance?

Nice capture! I agree with Dean that I want to be closer to the action, so I'd crop in substantially. And I agree with Geoff that this is ready for some ON1 magic--one of their presets or something that still keeps you qualified for PSA Nature (if you are competing).
Really make this dramatic! |

An interesting aerial battle! I think your lower bird is a red shouldered hawk, but we'll see what our experts think. I wish we saw a bit more of the lower hawk's face, but you've captured a great behavior--and he's just defending a perch, not a nest or food. I find this fascinating!
I'd love to see a bit more of the top bird, maybe open the shadows a tad? Or use the Lightroom radial filter on the face, so we can identify it and be drawn into the action more.
I'd be thrilled to have seen this and captured it! The blurred feathers don't bother me at all, as it indicates the birds were moving and embroiled.

Thanks so much! Yes, I used bird eye detection. The problem with the2x is that it gives you only 840-1000mm, so its a problem if you need flexibility. I think the 1.4x gives us more flexibility.
Ywp, south Florida weather is always fantastic from October to May. And full of birds. |

Helen, I love this portrait. And I love it in color. What an expressive face and posture. I could go with either background, and I'd love to see his knuckles cloned so they aren't so bright.
There is a wonderful portrait photographer, Glyn Dewis, in England, and he visits British WWII veterans and has them put on their uniforms and he does a photo portrait of them, but makes it look old-time. Such a wonderful gift. Here's a quick look at his portfolio. He has some touching videos, where he gives the veterans the portraits and its really a tear-jerker.
This portrait of this Ethiopian soldier felt very honoring, like Glyn's do.

All great ideas, Terry. I'll lighten her eyes and add more flowers. Here's the trick, mostly water, a little milk. And don't get the water hot or the models sweat and the make up runs. They need waterproof makeup. |

Mitch, thanks for your thoughts. No the tub is not symmetric, where her feet are is sloped, for a person to be able to say back in the tub. I'll see what I can do to make it even better, I do like Terry's version! |

In these old time scenes, I think the items are part of the history scene we are studying and add authenticity and interest to the image. |

Holy Moly, this is an incredible iPhone photo with great post-processing! What a crazy rock! The way you opened up the shadows on that is fantastic.
Two tiny points...I'm distracted by the brightness of the rock on the left and the far right "stream" in gold light that takes my eye off the page. I might subtly darken them.
Very impressive! |

Hmmm...it seems like your "before" photo and not your finished photo? The buildings seem overly dark on my monitor, and the sky and clouds are dissected by wires. You've got some nice light on the front of the buildings, but that is a small portion of the image.
So sorry, but it doesn't even feel like one of your images to me. |

Holy Moly! You are the master of b/w conversion! Can you talk about how you converted it (Nik? Color channels? eye droppers in Levels?)
And what techniques do you use to straighten your verticals? It was shot at an angle, and you've made it almost a head-on photo. |

Without reading your description, I thought, "What a lovely, peaceful place, I'd love to go there." And then I read your text and remembered that there is no such thing as an empty inn or pub in England!
Super sharp for 1/20th!!! I love the old inn and the canoes, but what is the black boat that takes away from the old-time feel?
I don't exactly understand why HDR did weird things, but you've corrected everything and its just a wonderful capture.
I bet the owners would love this shot, its so sweet and welcoming. |

Jim, nice old-time shot. I do like what Stephen L had done, it seems to have a bit more depth that yours. I think there is a bit of an advantage in having the pic a tad darker, as it would feel like a senior lady with the only light available to her, but we can see her tools around her. |
