Mervyn, I agree your image shown works really well and is not as dramatic as the second image you shared. It's gorgeous! |

Hi Jacob, thanks for your idea to make the soggy logs a separate piece, or maybe a texture. I've made some changes, can you check out my 1/27 entry and see if you think I've improved it or regressed? |

Candy, thanks so much for your "eagle eye". I've made all your suggested changes, any additional refinements? I would like to enter him in our photo club, so I'm up for any additional changes--see my 1/27 redeux. Thank you for your expertise! |

Hi Pierre, thanks for your kind comments. This is actually a little blue heron, they are very similar to the reddish egret. I've made some additional changes below, can you take a look and see if you have any additional suggestions? Thanks! |

Mervyn, wish I could just add a pinprick to give him a catchlight. Is my 1/27 change believable, or do you have a digital suggestion? I've added some additional changes--better or worse? |

I've redone my leaping bird and made the changes suggested--halo off neck and light spot by beak are removed, I've darkened the stumps just a bit, I've lightened the water just a bit, I've tried to add a glint in the eye and I've added a stroke. Any additional changes? I'd like to enter him in competition, so feel free to be picky ;-). |

I added your suggestion in! Thank you! Photographed a bald eagle and red shouldered hawk and a pileated woodpecker today, all from a distance in my kayak, but at least I am collecting some bird photos! |

Oh, its awesome! The blue neck with gold eyes is perfect! The little stick-up hairs and long eyelashes add a sense of comedy. I am not seeing anything not sharp.
There is a little white hair on his head and a couple of dandruff spots I would remove (if not competing in PSA Nature).
I worked at a nature preserve and our emu never turned blue. We did see ostrich turn color in Africa. Lucky you! |

I think you've done a nice job with this pastoral scene, Jacob. It's framed nicely with trees, and with the bushes in the front. I'm a little sketchy on the subject. The light takes you to a couple of spots but nothing is in them. We'll see what advice the others have for you, but I love you've branched into a big landscape photography. |

Oh, so excited to see a reddish egret! Lovely capture and I love how you processed it, especially the blue is a complimentary color to her neck. What beautiful definition to her wings and the wonderful line they create.
Where do you recommend that I go to photograph birds now? i went to Corkscrew, Hammock State Park and CREW Bird Rookery, but there were lots more birds in our trailer park than in the parks! LOL! Nesting doesn't start until March-April, correct? |

Gorgeous capture! Nice and crisp and a nice catchlight in his eye. If this isn't going to be entered in a PSA Nature where you can't remove anything, I'd want to take the branch off the top of your chickadee and even the branch behind him as it "chops off" the space behind him.
I'd be tempted to burn down the bright yellow leaves entering the frame on the far left. I'd also think about a light vignette, as a lot of branches and lines are taking us a lot of directions. |

Dean, its a lovely shot, but something feels off about it, and I am not sure why I am not connecting. Perhaps that the horizon line is centered and the subject tree is dead centered? In the original color, we are drawn past the subject with the complimentary gold color and we don't have this here. I look like it and am looking forward to the feedback from others. |

Lovely photo, Mervyn! Great silky water and some nice fall leaves. Awesome that you got down low. I'd be tempted to leave a tiny bit more at the top, do you have the original? It feels just a tad tight at the top. I also would consider darkening the water running out on the lower left, as it kept pulling my eye out of the pic to the left. I would like to see if Candy thinks it should be flipped. I have seen a lot of pix like this with a light magenta overlay to make it a bit more contemporary. Worth hanging, its just gorgeous! |

Terry, I think both versions are very interesting "street photography". On your latest version, I love the yellow and pulls the yellow in his backpack strap and her hair. I would be tempted to dull down the white in the yellow "frame" as it seems to be the brightest part of the photo. Her dress also seems to be a bit hot. I like the light color of her against the black of the man. Bravo for trying out a completely different idea! |

I've taken into account everyone's suggestions. Here are my edits--
cropped to 16:9, losing a lot of pavement
darkened the hazard bars at the end of the street
darkened the white panel truck at end of the street
tipped in the buildings to the right that seemed to be leaning
selected the sky, Gaussian blurred it to take out of some the artifact/noise and then brushed it back in around the buildings
Your thoughts? Any additional suggestions? I'm getting it ready for competition, so I appreciate your sharp eye! |

Terry, your changes to add more depth to my tiny version, and I'm shocked to see all the buildings further back that did not catch my eye before. There is a white light (car trails?) in bottom right corner that pulls my eyes off the page.

Jason, I did this with my finger on my laptop and its really meant to be done with a Wacom tablet. I made a layer for light and made it soft light. Then I painted a bit more white with a soft brush. Then I made a dark layer and painted with some gray/mauve on the edges of the clouds with a slightly more definition. Then I used some Gaussian blur to soften the clouds. I don't think these look great, but you at least get the idea of a bit more cloud to lend to the pastoral scene. |

Abdo, I adore your night shots! Your first photo in DD78 featured that narrow building in the dead of night and was astounding. I love your sky with the lit buildings, a similar theme to my Vatican photo this month. I especially like how the magenta of the sky is mimicked in the central building. Beautiful! Well done! |

Quite a pastoral scene! There is a nose on the left sticking out into the frame that could be erased. Sunil's straightening does change the energy of the photo, but does make it more serene and peaceful, and fits your good title, if that is your goal.
For a finishing touch, you might consider lightening the clouds a bit to make them a bigger part of the scene and echo the shape of the white cow, especially. |

I really think its very cool! I am impressed that you found that pic in the original shot. Are those fire hydrants? Whatever they are, but they are looking down, just like him. I especially like the that the colors are in his backpack straps, too.
Being picky, there is something between his legs on the floor that is a tad distracting. As always, you find the most unusual and fresh images. |

Sunil, I love how you edited this and brought in an interesting gold/olive color for the deer. I like your text choice. I like how they seem to be on a bit of a reflective surface to add dimension. The background is subtle and adds texture and dimension. Nice bit of framing on the left with the pine branch. Being very picky, I might give the deer's nose just a tiny bit more room at the top of the frame. |

So interesting, Jim! Love the colors, texture, light. Being very picky, my eye kept going to the top leaf that are still light. One leaf might need a tad bit of darkening.
I'd also love to see a tad more room on the little dead weed at the bottom. Really fabulous! |
