I spent a lot of time on fixing my bird--trying to bring back detail in the wings, hiding the rocks on the right, trying to sharpen the beak and eyes--and really just made more of a mess! If you don't have a good shot to start, the changes of making it better are not good! I will work to take some better bird pix and submit over the next few months. Thanks for all of the great critique...so helpful to know when to abandon an idea! |

Thanks, Candy! I am going to work on it a bit and see if I can get some more detail, just as a good post-processing exercise! |

I couldn't figure out if I was looking at a dead leaf as a macro shot....wild how bizarre and unique the shot is! |

Thanks, Geoffrey! I was going for a more artful pose, mostly about the wings and the colored water. But I will work on bring out the eyes more. I am not sure what "levelled the bird" means? |

Thanks, Merlyn! I'll work on burning down the rock and bringing out the beak and eyes better. Gotta start in bird photography somewhere! LOL! See you in person when you get back from Africa! |

Hi Jacob! Glad you are out there shooting! You might look for really fresh flowers for your subject, these are really wilted and there is some dead stuff in the pic.
I do like the diagonal stem in the pic. It leads us in to the composition nicely.
Try another flower next month, using the tips everyone has piled on. You will be shocked at your improvement! |

Candy, I was shocked to see how much was in your original that you got rid of. Did you burn the greens or did you select your subject and remove them? I do see a little green showing up at bottom left, so I'm guessing you just burned A LOT.
Breathtakingly beautiful, and bravo that you saw it in the mess of the waterlily garden! |

What a great photo! I'd love to have been there!
I love the b+w! I agree with Geoffrey that a bit more at the top would be great, as there is a lot of dark at the top. Maybe flip the photo?
You could increase the contrast with a brush for the waves, not the depressions. |

I really like this, Mervyn! Well processed! I would be tempted to burn down the dirt a bit, but I do like the trees above them. I'm not sure if you can lighten their eyes a bit and bring in a little more life to them? |

I just love it. I love the closed eye sharp and the sweet face. Kind of looks like he is chewing on a piece of straw like an old farmer. Well done! |

Thanks, Terry! The left rock is blurred because its under water, I did not blur it. I'll work on taking down the rock and still make bird show up. I'll add a bit more room. I appreciate the re-do! |

I will work on the rock contrast and making the bird's eyes more noticeable. Thanks! |

Brilliant! Such a great conversion to B+W. I agree that the shadows can open open just a tad. I do love the "eye" looking at us. |

I love this! I love your processing, but understand Sunil's and Jason's concerns. Perhaps just dropping a little opacity on your changes. I do like Jason's idea of removing plants, if you can, depending on how you are competing with it. |

Bravo, Richard! What a white out! I love your composition, but I also think that Jason has moved in an interesting direction (perhaps split the difference).
I would love to see the original, as I have trouble with snow and water splashes, and would love to see your processing progression. |

Wow, a great subject and sky! Lots of great ideas already offered. I believe I like Jim Hagan's the best, with the tree kept and the right building mostly cropped out. However, I could easily be sold on Terry's and Stephen's crops. I'm looking forward to the other photos you shot of this subject and will be posting next month! |

Welcome, Jim! I really like your still life, and can't believe you saw this composition from that messy table! I actually like both the cream and beige backgrounds. The play of light is really interesting. |
