Dean, I do think you did capture a fresh composition! In addition to the diagonal, I like the stems in a similar color to the orange monarchs. I like the lavender flowers both in focus and then out of focus.
I love it. We are heading to Butterfly World in Ft. Lauderdale in the next week or so, so hopefully, I can be as successful in a much easier setting. Where would one go in Austin to get these pix? When do the butterflies come in?

Geoffrey, G'day, mate! (couldn't resist!) We look forward to more of your photography! It is a powerful and impactful photo, as Donna mentioned, and these shots are tough to get. Donna is a master, you have to check out her Facebook page. Candy also gets some awesome shots and adds some incredible background textures to really highlight (or hide) some photo flaws. Perhaps Candy can give this a shot.
I am still not comfortable with any crop shown so far, but I do like your original thought--the second crop--better than the photo entered. Did any others of your other eagle shots turn out that might lend themselves to a better crop? Certainly a wonderful experience, even if the capture wasn't ideal! |

Yes, Dean, I highly recommend it. I photographed over a dozen animals in 3 days of shoots, including pine martins, river otters, coyotes, snow leopards, tigers, cougars, grizzly bears, leopards and lynxes, as well as many juveniles for the "adorable" shots. No fences and the animals are "wild" since they are released in a new territory and run and swim and sniff...so alert compared to sleeping animals at zoos. You have to go with a photo group and its pricey, but it was so worth it. |

I like how the heron is nicely framed by the bushes recessed behind his head. Well done, as always. I agree his eye could be a little lighter.
I am going to be in Palm Beach/Miami for a month (mid Dec to mid Jan) and in the Orlando area mid-Feb to Mid March, if any of you have any suggestions for photo ops, particularly bird locations during my timeframes. Thanks! |

I agree with Donna and Mervyn. The eye needs to show us a bit more catch light, but the lines and actions are great. What great markings! Where did you photograph him? |

I love it! What a great view with the river taking us to the mountain, with amazing colors. The HDR is a bit crunchy on my screen, and I think less HDR is worth considering. Fabulous capture and one of my favorites by you! |

Yes, Pierre, he ran and swam and carried on in a big way! Tigers love water. And finally he held still for this. |

Thanks for the thoughts, Donna. I tried to remove the grass and had a miserable time trying to get rid of it with all the cat hair. I did not catch the twig or the hotspot. |

Dave, I liked the raised shadows and extra birds! I'm a tad confused about the mention of obvious cloning, as Jason says his image at the top is straight out of camera? |

Oh, brilliant change Dave. The lioness could stay dark and you'd still read her first. And there is some tension with the woman walking out of the frame. "Quick, look! Who is she?" |

I really like Jason's lightening of the graffiti. I love the door/woman/big purse. I think it adds so many layers of interest and it holds our attention while we figure out what is at the end of the alley. Great discussion--I think it worked well with you giving us your "rush" job. |

Yes, I think that the group helped you create a lovely, warm portrait of your granddaughter. One thing I noticed is that the brick is a harsh background for a sweet girl. I wouldn't have noticed it, except we went back and forth between backgrounds and the softer grass/shrub worked better with her youth. Did your family like it? |

Another idea is to save textures like bricks, planks, moss, etc. You can add these behind a pic at a light opacity. It often adds a richness and interest to the photos. |

Abdo, what interesting expressions! I love your sports photography!
I would like to have just a bit more room for her hand at the bottom, if you have it.
I would remove the white lines on the right bottom and the white spot near them.
I would remove/darken the yellow spot by the man's shirt sleeve.
I would remove or crop the bright light on the top left.
Since their expressions are so "sour", maybe "Very Bad Score" for a title?
Perhaps open their eye shadows and sharpen their eyes a bit?
Wonderful capture! |

Wonderful and unique capture, Jason! If you shot in raw, I'd run noise reduction before you process anything else. I'd straighten it, it looks like the horizon line is a little tilted?
Love the lens flare. I'd crop a bit off the top and bottom, just to keep us focused on your marvelous birds and allow us to see them a bit closer.
There are a couple stray birds in the lens flare I'd be tempted to remove.
Can't wait to see what everyone suggests! Its a great pic! |

Dave, I love how you ditched the vivid green background and distractions. What a vivid interior, its quite a maze leading me around the petals.
It may be just me, but I would love just a little more space for the top petal and would love to see the entire petal on the bottom.
I would never have thought to focus stack a macro subject, I've only seen it on big landscapes. |

Richard, what an interesting subject! I don't have a skill set to solve this for you, but here are a couple of thoughts.
Does it need to be straightened? The house roof seems to have a slant. Also, I'd darken the air conditioner on the left, as that is not as interesting as the graffiti or the woman.
I'll look forward to some thoughts about the graffiti from our experts. I'd be tempted to lighten it up a tad, as the alley leads us directly into the door/woman/purse, so it would just add interest. |

Sunil, a very nice HDR landscape! A couple of thoughts...the stuff on the top of the hill is a little distracting, I would consider removing it.
Also, its suggested that the horizon line is 2/3 of the picture. Since yours is a little closer to the middle, maybe crop a tad more of the sand.
Love your photography. |

Hi Alan, I love how you are trying a lot of different types of photography! This month, portraits and outlining! Both incredibly difficult!
I am not a portrait photographer, so perhaps some other group members can offer more professional advice.
In a portrait, we really like the eyes looking right at us. She seems to be looking off a bit. You have a really nice catch light in her eyes, which is great. It is suggested that we not "chop off any limbs". You'll note that at the bottom, two arms and a knee are chopped, leading us off the page with some severe lines. If you crop up farther, you can crop at more of a normal portrait torso that is less disturbing to see "cut".
When you change backgrounds, you need to add a shadow to make it look real and not "pasted on". This will add dimension and depth to the photo. Her outline is a pretty good, although its easy to see where you "cut her out" along her hair (always a tricky part!). A shadow may help disguise that, also.
Finally, make sure you drop down to aim your camera right in someone's eyes. It looks like you were standing and she is a lot smaller than you. It will make the portrait feel a lot more personal and intimate.
I am so pleased you are trying so many things! Fantastic! |
