Thanks for all the feedback! I've cropped the grass and from the left. I've put a warming filter in the center and then removed it from the clouds.
I lightened the grass, painting with the sunlight color, to leave a slight sunlit grass path (too much?) as Donna had demonstrated much more proficiently. I lightened the purple hill strip the trees fall in, so they stood out a bit more realistically.
Better? Overdone? |

I can't wait to see more of your efforts in Astro, Rob! I think the rock is very fun and different, and love the wavy mountains and sprinkle of stars. Creative effort! |

Donna, thanks for the very clear explanation on the nature vs general cropping and how nature judges would look for a certain crop compared to Facebook. Very useful info!

I agree with everyone else--the light through the ears is the best part and their focus on you. The darkness on their face is a tad distressing...I don't know if you could do a little dodging and lighten them just a tiny bit. Lucky shot! |

Sorry, this must have been posted after I saw the first round. I didn't know about bug hatches! I really like the branches and the reflection, locations didn't bother me, although I'm sure there are lots of variations available to this capture. It looks a tad saturated on my screen, but no one else mentioned it, so it must be me. We do not get those intense sunsets in Indiana! |

Beautiful capture, Donna! Super sharp focus, gorgeous feathers, crisp branches. I like how he's more interesting with his back to us, but his head at a 90 degree angle, very classic.
I am sure you have a reason for so much room above his head. I'd be interested in your thinking, as I would have cropped it lower.
I've never seen a yellow crowned heron, so this was a treat! |

Interesting subject, Candy! Well in focus, great contrast. An eye-catching abstract. I found the chopped off trunk to be distracting, so perhaps cropping down to remove it? In trying that, the root almost looks like a body with "hands" reaching out.
The dark cut in the bottom right is also distracting. Perhaps cloning it out is an option. |

Very sharp--those claws, the branch, the tail feathers! And nice catchlight in his eye. Black birds are the toughest to get, as their definition is so hard to see, but I think you've done an admirable job.
Is the light behind the bird natural, or did you lighten it to show off the bird better? Perhaps its a branch? It seems a bit too light and I found it distracting. I'll be interested what our bird experts say. |
