Donna, Thanks for your explanation. I just sent a friend request on Facebook. As a relatively new photographer, I'm still struggling to get the basics. But I enjoy seeing what other photographers are doing. I didn't join the group to get compliments, I am looking for ways to improve a photo. |

Donna, I love the additional photos you posted here--they are spectacular! Super crisp birds and blurred backgrounds--really perfect.
I absolutely hear that you are trying new techniques with top equipment and top training, so go for it! Just like when Candy began introducing textured backgrounds, many of us did not like the look--and now we can appreciate it! This is a great place to try new things and see how they fly--but in the end--its only your photo and your final decision. |

Pierre, I think your sharpening did the trick! Inspired by your image,I tried shooting swans last week--it was much harder than it looks! I think that the idea of burning down the rocks might be worth exploring, so our eyes stay on the lovely loopy lines of your swans. |

I love this pic and I think it stands as is, or with the left crop or the crops that Donna suggested. Thanks for your explanation of your boat speed--I think it was smart to shoot with a fast ISO. |

I really like the grasshopper sharpened, that was just what it needed! I like both Candy's and Mervyn's cropping. Like this pic even more this time around! A vibrant summer feeling! |

Thanks for all the comments! Candy, thanks for the idea of the warming filter and vignette. And I did not see those BIG specks at the top! Pierre, where did you see a sensor smudge?
I think my inspiration was a painting in my grandparents' beach house with a lot of negative space and the smoky colors. I do like the negative space, as that's how you see them on the beach...tiny birds running in a huge expanse of sand and water. |

Rob, lovely capture! I agree with Donna that the bird could use more room on the right, especially with the strong leading lines of the fallen tree branch and the bird looking so strongly to the right. But I do love the small vertical trees and they keep us moving around the frame. Even the fallen roots on the far right side behind the bird lend to the composition. |

Ground level--good for you! Great catch light in the eye and beautiful detail in her delicate feathers. And wonderful framing with grass blades, I've not seen that done before!
I find the lower portion that is out of focus to be really distracting, perhaps cropping up to eliminate this would allow us to move more easily to the bird and grass. |

I am dazzled by how flipping the image made such a difference! I love the lines and how the bird feather and beak and orange legs keep us traveling around and around the photo. Beautiful detail in the feathers and tree stump.
On my monitor, the bird and background seem a bit dark and perhaps lacking a light source?

Usually "butt" pix are to be avoided, but this is the exception! I agree with Donna that the swans look a tad soft, you might try sharpening them. Really spectacular capture and a bit of sharpening on just the birds will move this into a winner! |

Dean, I love your black and white image with great contrasts. Your sky is fabulous! I like both your mid-line horizon line showing the mirror look, and I also like Donna's cropped version.
I note you are 1/1600 sec and 1600 ISO. Did you need to be that fast due to the boat and water motion? There doesn't seem to be any noise in the photo. |

I agree with Donna's comments and wonder if you couldn't sharpen it a tad, so our grasshopper is also crisp. I also like the multiple layers that the petals provide. Italian poppies...such an amazing landscape! |

Donna, thanks for your thoughts. How would you suggest I crop the birds? I played around with other options, and this high key is my favorite. Do you like this version better? |
