Rob, I think you have an interesting shot here, with the eye being super crisp and then the feathers being in movement. I agree with Dean that a traditional shot would be shot at a faster shutter speed, however, I think this is a "look twice" photo.
I'd consider a vignette on the outside or darkening the hot spots in the background. And the bird seems a bit washed out to me. Maybe some more darks and vibrancy to add some energy to the capture? |

Hi Chuck,
On my screen, I'm seeing this very over-saturated. I haven't moved into mirrorless to know whether its your Velvia choice.
I love the scene.Nice foreground, middle ground and background and well-lit. I'm distracted by a lot of items moving off the page--clouds and bushes. I'd consider removing some of the wispy clouds at the top and maybe darken a bit on the side shrubbery to keep our eye from going out of frame? |

Fantastic shot as always! I would love to see what textures you added. They are so subtle, I can't pic them up. I love how you took a so-so cluttered shot and made it a winner. The lighting on the birds is spectacular. Great detail and then a quick fall-off into shadow. I particularly like the slate rock behind the birds to be the background and add texture. I love the contrast between light birds and darkness. |

Nicely done! I agree it looks much cleaner than a normal butterfly shot with the nicely colored and very plain background. Nicely shot and processed. I don't have any ideas for you to improve. |

Wow! Congrats on being there for the total eclipse! Looks great to me, although I have no expertise in this type of photo. I appreciate you dedication, Dean! |

Wow, she's a lot darker than my Kenyan cats! The out of focus grass in the foreground is less distracting that the out of focus grass on the left side of the pic. I'm not sure if cropping her tight enough to remove it would ruin the pic. I used the same lens and handheld...I bet you did, too.
Color, focus and composition are all great..just that pesky grass troubles me. |
