Thanks for the back story! I think we all like to know the details of where and when we got the shot...and all the effort we put into getting it (laying in snow in a Canadian winter??? I think not!). Great job!

Rob, nice job capturing a rare species! I think its nicely framed and the feathers are well-defined. It is missing a catch-light in his eye and that is considered a "miss" in animal photography. I'd suggest googling how to add a catchlight and see if you can make a realistic look in the bird's eye so he doesn't look dead. It's tricky!
A light vignette might also keep our eye on the bird and lessen our eye leaving the composition with the beach wood. |

I didn't know the sandhills went to Colorado, we get about 30,000 in Indiana about 2 hours away. But we don't have mountains in our background! I love the two cranes flying by the mountains and I'd enhance them a touch. And I like Mervyn's idea of sharpening one or two cranes in the front to capture our attention.
My attention kept going to the left, where a sandhill was cropped in half and there is a ladder fence. I'd remove or crop those.
On the birds, there are big highlights and some dark shadows that make them a bit hard to see. You might want to do some detail work and bring out some of those birds better.
Love to have seen this in person!

I completely agree with Mervyn's comments. Awesome capture with the funny, twisty neck with an open beak. And a great catch-light. And your work to get a realistic blue water is perfect.
If I understand your process, you created a duplicate copy, then processed each (one for bird, one for water) and then you used a mask to brush off the layer? How do you get such perfect lines around your bird and not get bad edges and halos? Great post processing!

Oh, love this! Tell us where you shot this and whether this was in the wild or in a domesticated situation? The snow drops really make this a superlative pic. Great catch lights in the fox's eyes. It seems a tad light on the right side of the fox, but I like the effect and would keep it. Great blurred background. Just perfect! |

I just love this! Silver Effects Pro was a good choice. Nice light to dark range and the clouds are awesome. I played with cropping some of the water out, and that's an option to make your clouds even more powerful! I also love the color version. Nice capture. |

Mervyn, Great capture and I agree with canvas increase and cropping. I enlarged the photo, and you do have a gleam in the eye, although it doesn't show up in the normal sized photo. You might consider enhancing the sparkle. I might also lighten the shadow and add contrast on the underside of the bird's wing. Wish I could be there shooting with you! |
