Rob, I agree that this is pleasing. I grew up on the Atlantic ocean and just love gulls. I wonder, like Mervyn, if 3 gulls would be more interesting. I'd be tempted to remove the left gull, leaving the three on the right. They are all doing different things and make a nice triangular line. |

Candy, I like your use of the dehaze filter on this photo. You kept the mystical quality while emphasizing the cardinal. |

Candy also used the ACR filter on my photo and improved it a lot. Great photo, with both Candy's and Mervyn's changes adding even more to a great image. |

I like both pix, Mervyn. I think these wild horses are awesome and I like both stories. |

Chuck, what a great shot! Lucky you! I agree with Pierre that bringing out your lynx will make the shot even more exciting. I might add a bit of contrast to the dead deer, but agree with Pierre that the lynx must be your prominent subject. I would be tempted to remove that branch from the lynx's face, if it doesn't break any competition rules for you I would like to trim a bit of the snow in the foreground to bring us closer to the deer and lynx. I don't know how to deal with the brightness of the snow, perhaps our more experienced photographers will be able to take you to the perfection that this photo can be! Exciting capture! |

Candy, love the diagonal lines of the bird's travel and then his wings in an opposed diagonal. The light through the heron's wings and beak makes it very special. I think you did a great job bringing out shadows without flattening the composition. The textured background was nicely executed without being noticeable and distracting from your bird. Perfectly done! |

Pierre, what a great pic! What city and country were you when you photographed this? I think it works to have the cardinal dead center, because the curve of the branch keeps our interest moving around the composition. I am tempted to want to use a clarity brush on just a few tiny places to add more interest. The bird's beak and black face, a tiny bit on a couple of pine cones, a few feathers brightened to hold our interest in the snow storm. |

Dean, I've not heard of Hamilton Pools, but I love it! I liked how you opened up the dark and took down the light without creating a flat or over processed photo. I love the circular line leading us around the pool, right to the mini-waterfall. The green light flashes add interest and the stalactites bring our eyes back to the pool and white rocks leading us again.
I like the composition and crop, I'd like to see a bit darker sky to keep my interest in the pool. Great job! |

Oh, I've always wanted to see the wild horses on the Outer Banks since I read a story as a child...gotta get there! I agree with Pierre that the pic is just a bit blah. However, I feel the moodiness of the photo is part of the wild beauty. I feel that somewhere between the shadows opened up and Pierre's bright scene will be your perfect shot. I might trim a tad of the blue sky off since it doesn't hold any interest. You might play with trimming some of the foreground grass to bring us closer to the wild horses. Sweet photo! I like the contrast of the dark horses, soft sand and greenish grass. The horses movement echos the sand and grass lines, lending to the horses moving. |
