I think what's happened here is that, while taking the shot, the birds should have been exposed such that the shadows were opened up for their detail. Then you wouldn't have had to play around so much with the shadows tool. This meant that the sky would have brightened considerably, but in editing you could have selected out the birds and darkened the sky. It's difficult to get natural looking details from very dark exposures. |

As noted, the bird looking directly at you really makes this shot. Sharpened well. Perhaps brighten the eyes a bit? Good example of a high key image. Very good effort -- will do well in a competition, I'm sure. |

I agree with Cindy's comments, with the only exception being that I try to avoid shots where the sun angle leaves the bird in shadow. In fact, if I see where the subject is not being illuminated by the sun (unless there is considerable overcast) I won't even bother with taking a shot. Of course, this is my personal approach; I just see shadows as taking away detail. Still, a nice capture of an elegant bird. |

Nice bird portrait; does she have a seed in her mouth? The bird is a little lacking in detail because she is in the shadow, so maybe you could try some brightening. This also means that the bright background competes for visual attention with the subject, which can be toned down by cropping in from the left. |

Nice capture and the bird's catch tells the story. I think you could have cropped in from the right some more, and even a bit from the left. If you compare the color balance with the original, it seems that you went a little too blue. Also, the image could be leveled out some. |
