The darkened green background make for the perfect framing device, and really sets the flower apart. Maybe the background could stand a bit more saturation, at least toward the front. Unless it's my monitor there are one or two hot spots in the leaves, but otherwise this is a well composed picture. As Peggy notes, this is lovely to look at. |

Nice story captured here, but yeah -- the story is the interaction between mom and kid and not enough light is shed onto the faces, and thus not enough detail comes through. Lacking fill flash the alternative would have been to try and position yourself to where the sunlight would be coming from over your shoulder if that was possible. |

Pleasant sea/landscape, but I think Peggy is correct about the lighting on the big rock, in that it seems like the light is coming from two different directions. There is also a thin halo surrounding all of the rocks. This image does give off a feeling of anticipation of the coming day. |

This is a difficult shot to pull off, because the sign, while necessary to explain the clever jean display, also is so dominant that it detracts from the display of the 'plant pants.' Or, perhaps the sign plus everything else that is going on behind the fence adds to the clutter. Still, a good spot of an interesting and maybe unique scene. |

You've captured a nice mood, and the image is enhanced by the way you have handled the color and exposure. Great line leading to the light -- could you have moved slightly to either side which would have brought the composition off of center? Somehow, the water in the middle adds to the picture. Overall, this is very well done. |

Peggy -- there is much to like about your image. All sorts of intersecting planes and geometric shapes. The yellow, green and blue of the staircase is like a jewel set in the broader grayish flats and curves. A bit of mystery surrounds the disappearance of the staircase, leading to who knows where. The sunlit area right next to the yellow might be a bit hot. I think also that you might get rid of the greenery at the bottom in that this seems to be all about artificial subjects and not natural. Great vertical orientation. Very nicely done! I wonder how this would look in monochrome. |

Cindy -- this is a very fine image, and you caught the moment well. I've been going over this, back and forth, and the only thing that kind of hurts the image just a bit is that the wings appear too, what, transparent, or maybe the correct term is translucent, more like the delicate wings of an insect. I know the late day lighting had something to do with it, but most bird's wings are more solid appearing. At 1/1600 shutter speed I don't think it's at all blurred. Just an observation .... I think Bruce is on to something with his suggestion. |

Marge -- just my opinion, but there is no such thing as an extreme photo; it all depends on the context. To me (to paraphrase Ansel Adams) pictures are not taken, they're made. As long as you don't misrepresent how you arrived at the final image for whatever contest you are entering, the sky's the limit. Don't pin yourself down to any one kind of image. It was recommended to me early on to study the great painters throughout history in order to learn the various and creative approaches to art. |

Marge -- I believe there is too much negative space at the top, which doesn't really help the composition. As well, you could add some to the bottom. Maybe play around with different ratios, even try a more vertical orientation. The coloring is nice and subtle. |

Another way of finding vertical -- and horizontal -- in a composition is to drag the entire editing box over to the right or left side of the computer. The edge is always at perfect right angles to the image. |

Tigertail beach in Marco Island is a great place for shore birds of all types. |

Caught at the right time, and nice and sharp -- noticeable in the claws and feathers. Am I wrong, but is that noise in the waves immediately below the bird? Color balance looks good. In different parts of the shooting sequence, was there more of a splash? That might have added to the drama. |

This must be bluebird appreciation month! Nice vertical orientation, bokeh for the background and sharpness for the bird and this applies as well for the highlights in the eye. Kind of a flat 'z' with the line up from the plant, through the body and then the head. Possibly a little more saturation in the bird but all in all quite well done. |

Very good image! Sharp subject with blurred background and a nice diagonal formed by the tree branch. Perfect catch light in the eye. Good cropping. Not much to criticize here. |
