22 Apr 22 Comment You gave yourself a very difficult task indeed, trying to get overall correct exposure when the image contains very bright and quite dark elements. For example, the yellow band on the balloon on the left could have been selected so that it retained the exposure level of the original while allowing you to brighten up the rest of the balloon. The balloon next to it was, at least in my experience, always going to be difficult to get correctly because its red shades seem to bleed into one another. The one in the middle seems to have been edited with the best results. Apr 21st
22 Apr 22 Comment Nice idea in contrasting the solid, round geometric shape of the moon with the feathery and fainter look of the cirrus clouds. The lit portion of the clouds on the lower right does offer something of a distraction, however. As Joe hints at, perhaps the moon could be given a more prominent place in the composition by brightening it and zooming in more. And I would disagree with your selection of shutter speeds -- the moon just doesn't move that much in a short time, and is at an infinite distance from you. At 97 mm, I would think that under 1/1,000 sec would be more than adequate, maybe 1/750 sec. At that slower speed you could also allow for more brightness of the moon, and a lower ISO. Apr 18th
22 Apr 22 Comment A very nice effort, Kaylyn. This image is quite atmospheric and contains a sense of foreboding -- the walls are overrun with graffiti and yet I can't image anyone wanting to view the art work in this place, at least not at night. Perhaps the place is jumping during the day. I like your effort in plumbing the vertical beam on the left, to take the lean out of the composition. It appears you had to choose between the beam and its shadow; the shadow is true vertical and the beam leans in a bit. Sorry, I tend to notice these things, but it certainly doesn't take away from the image. Fine subtle coloring overall -- great shot! Maybe you could return to this scene right after a rain when the surfaces are still quite wet. Did you ever see the movie "The Third Man?" The director had the local fire department in Vienna hose down the streets to add to the mood of the movie. Apr 10th
22 Apr 22 Comment Quite dynamic, with shapes, lines, and explosions of color everywhere. This would make a nice poster for a B movie or documentary portraying the destruction of earth by meteor showers or some kind of alien death rays! Could you go into your technique a little bit more? I don't understand what you mean by seven or eight images blended into one, with all of this at 1/20th of a second. Apr 10th
22 Apr 22 Comment Peggy -- I very much like this image pretty much as it is. The larger door panel is counterbalanced by the tall narrow window on the right. Beautiful golden color and the sharp edges give this an abstract, almost cubist design. The uneven lighting and distortions in the glass also add to the image. I even like the amount of exposure you have given the door hardware; it suggests that it is an 'everyday' object, yet also allows the viewer to see that overall it is an abstract composition in its essence. Very well done! Apr 9th
22 Apr 22 Reply Joe, those are the famous ghosts of Baltimore harbor. They are searching for their long lost baseball team. Apr 9th
22 Apr 22 Comment I think you picked just about the right time to photograph this city/sea scape, as the dark blue/black of the sky renders a great mood. I agree with Joe that the bright sign crowds the left side of the composition. I also think you made a nice choice with the blue stroke -- it defines the picture but does not detract. Good shot!
