Great shot, Marti. When I saw the thumbnail I figured you had used the zoom tool. Very dynamic lines bursting out from the flower almost as if it was a star radiating energy. The hard edges of the leaves (or needles?) contrast nicely with the round shapes of the cone. Very good soft box effect. I don't think I've seen a cone at this stage of development. You really had your creative eye working overtime on this one! |

Nice color balance, and a nice shallow s curve from bottom to top where the stream runs off from the falls. Interesting takes on the dead tree, although its removal would not be permitted in most competitions. There appears to be a stone wall with a railing on top that could be removed. My main negative comment would be that the falls are
too centered, but overall this is a beautiful image. |

Always interesting to see the contrast of the human, artificial element placed in a natural, and in this case desolate, vista. The hard edges and straight lines versus the flowing and natural. When you see a picture like this it always has attached to it a bit of mystery: how long has this structure been here? Is it still in operation, or have the owners long since departed? Do those who built this continue the struggle, or is nature eventually going to reclaim what it once owned? In this regard I certainly see an underlying theme and story in your image, Mike. Just as a suggestion, I tried cropping in from the right to emphasize a line between the windmill and the small hill in the distance, and even the distant peak. Hope you don't mind ... |

Joe -- a lot of nice elements for both pictures, especially in terms of composition. There's a visual tension between the pier and the atv; the pier forms a solid, visible line heading toward the right, and the atv "suggests" a line running also to the right with the vehicle's shadow adding to that line. The footprints in the foreground serve as a nice framing device, and the various bands of color and texture really add to the overall image. The texture and subtlety in the final gives a real water color feel. The original has a real life look to it while the final has about it a dream-like state. I enjoy going back and forth between the two pictures -- what would happen if you boosted the contrast a bit and added a dark vignette to the original? Either way, both pics look great! Very creative ... |

Peggy, I kept going back and forth between 2 and the final -- there are elements from both that are nice. I'm guessing that here you use gloomy to imply a bit of fog or mist in the air and that certainly fits the final image, so nothing wrong with that. Perhaps the sky is a little too bright in 2 and the final, while the exposure of the sky in the original fits the misty look in the final a bit better, and doesn't detract so much from the foreground. As mentioned, maybe the crop at top is too close. Overall, though, a good effort!
PS: Would it help the composition if you took the shot from a lower angle? This could put more emphasis on the flowers. |

Beautiful image Al. Wonderful color and the zig-zag of the river is a great leading line taking the viewer straight to the mountains. The foreground brush and the tree on the left serve to frame the composition, and there's a nice and subtle vignette applied. Might be my monitor, but I wonder if there is a bit of banding in the sky. Not too much wrong with this picture! |
