I used an 18 to 70 mm lens. I couldn't get any closer or I would have been out of focus. I also had to consider depth of field, and f8 seemed to work out. |

That's correct. In some of the other shots, the water had not yet come back together and you could see the exposed dish. |

Nice atmospheric image. I don't know if the term "alpenglow" fits here, but I like the glow that hugs the rock formation at the top which to me suggests distant city lights or a twilight sky off on the horizon. As others have mentioned, the falls are too centered, and the rocks immediately next to the falls have the appearance of a face, and the brightness detracts from the water. The flow of the water has a good L shape to it. Good spot, and good work in PS. |

There's a nice rule of thirds here with the rocks, the crashing surf, and the open water in the background. Nice golden sunset tones as well. I think Joe is correct in pointing out the way the wave blends too much into the background water. I wonder if more detail could be brought out from the rocks. A good dynamic image. |

Joe, I'm sorry but this image just doesn't work for me, for several reasons. You have what appears to be elements from different pictures patched together, and because the skyline is realistic and the water has become pretty much an abstract pattern, it appears that you have a composition made up of two different styles, with each competing against the other for attention. The theme for this month, water, has taken a subordinate role in the composition to the skyline, and in fact the pattern in the water seems to direct my eye to the buildings, and at least in my opinion they have become the subject. Also, the joining of the two parts is right in the middle. One other thing, and that is I find the moire effect in the water, which was enhanced by your mirroring the image, is a bit annoying. |

Great composition, Al. The eye follows a circular path from the jug, down along the water flow, then the pot, then back up the "steps" formed by the bricks. Maybe the lower left has a bit of clutter that could be removed. To me this has a 'water'color feel to it, which makes it doubly appropriate for this month's theme! |

I love getting into a discussion about this left to right, right to left convention. I always use the argument that the Arabs and the Jews seem to have gotten along over the centuries reading right to left. And this doesn't even take into account the Chinese and Japanese! At any rate, Peggy, this is a very well done and creative approach to this month's theme. Great spot from Joe seeing the cage. This is strictly a matter of opinion, but I would prefer a very dark, even black, background, which would really make the "crystal" sparkle. Great job! |

I think the leaves at the top serve somewhat as a frame but, as Joe says, also act as a distraction because in general the eye is attracted to the lightest element in the image. In this case the composition seems top heavy. I agree with Mike that there is a painterly quality to the trees and reflection. There is also a sense of mystery here;
I wonder what might be lurking behind any tree ... |
