Mike -- have you had many opportunities to grab shots of the coyotes that roam nearby? Interesting crossing pattern in the the paw print. |

Joe's reference to the "hand of man" is a common phrase used in many competitions and is meant to point out in a given image where evidence of human activity is present, thus negating the feeling of a purely natural and wild state. This could include structures, feeders, cars traveling along a distant highway, etc. In this case, Joe was referring to the sawed off tree stump. |

I wonder if there is too much uniformity in the overall design. Yes, there are alternating light and dark areas, but repeating the shapes over and over again without some kind of contrasting tone or shape to visually counter the image leaves the theme a little underdeveloped. |

Now that I think about it, the soft box effect, plus the vastness of the landscapes, reminds me somewhat of the opening shots from 2001 A Space Odyssey. |

Just the right sun angle -- I'm guessing early morning, which really brings out the texture and form in the mountains. You kind of have a sandwich of textures here, with a relatively smooth foreground, then a craggy part, then the smoothness of the sky. Just to show you can't make everyone happy, I'm thinking that a little more of the sky should be showing, in order to reveal a more pronounced rule of thirds. Beautiful, subtle colors. Speaking of sandwich made me hungry -- I'm going to go get something to eat. |

Nice swooping picture of the owl. I must say, though, that my eye is drawn to the white outline around the bird's talons, which probably indicates over-sharpening. Perhaps you weren't able to get into the correct position, but could you have gotten a shot of the owl with some meat in it's clutches? The upper left segment of the image seems to be empty of visual interest. |

Yeah, this is a tough call. I certainly see your point about portraying the gator's surrounding habitat, but in this case the background competes too much with the gator, which is your subject -- for example, the tree trunk leaning in from the upper right part of the picture, which visually carries about the same weight as the gator. The bottom part of the image is very well done. Maybe you could crop down to just above the gator's head and let the viewer "fill in" the background mentally. |

Very well done. In my opinion, the overcast made this shot. There is a real feeling of vastness, isolation, cold, and desolation. Your figure gives a sense of a photographer venturing out against the elements to capture the shot. I like the artificial colors from the pink of the coat and black of the equipment and the way they contrast with the drab natural surrounding colors. My only complaint would be that you are placed a little too close to the bottom. Otherwise, great shot! Brrrrr ... |
