Very nice job with this picture, Kaylyn. As long as Ansel Adams's legacy lives on landscapes will always make for good black and white subjects. As with Mikes's picture this month, this image also says "American west." Nice tonal range from black to white and quite good contrast. I keep going back and forth as regards Marti's thoughts on the cropping -- yes, there could be more detail in the falls, but the way you have it here there is more a sense of vastness and desolation. Either way works well. |

Mike -- very interesting shot and this really says "American West." Good job bringing out the colors, but is the brush in the foreground really that kind of silver/gray/green shade? Certainly could be -- just wondering. Effective rendering of the wide open spaces and freedom to roam that still exists out there. However, I must say that the "hat" really draws my eyes away from the horses, possibly being too far to the right. So, is the subject of the picture the horses or the Mexican Hat? Or, can it be both? |

This is a different kind of treatment of a sunset in that the colors are subdued and subtle and not overly saturated. You mentioned a rim light -- is that the narrow halo of light that hugs the tree trunk? The high, wispy clouds and the water are dark enough to act as a frame for the sun and tree. I think this works well. |

In the strictest sense, this image has crossed over from being a photograph and has become a graphic image, as Mike alludes to -- parts of the pic remind me a bit of a watercolor. The windows and plants make for a nice receding visual line but the door may be placed a little too much to the right edge of the picture, lending too much visual "weight" toward that side. Very colorful and nice to look at. |

Very nice composition, Peggy. The church steeple really pops out and the eyes are immediately drawn to it, and serves as a contrast between the natural and the artificial. The patterns and colors formed by the trees in their fall foliage makes for a really nice and pleasing image. As you say. it has a graphic look to it, but perhaps the blues are a bit too intense, unless that was by design. Maybe a little over the edge, but I wonder if this picture shows the church (and by extension, man) pushing for a place in the sun and struggling against natural forces, which are threatening to overtake and subsume. |

This is the mother of all butt shots! Nice job of removing the wires. The brush and fence in the background and overall the grass frames the horse nicely. The colors look natural. The whites in the "hind quarters" seem to be a bit blown out. Good portrayal of a horse relaxing and going with the flow. |
