This is an example of what I'm talking about. |

Bright sunshine, especially in the afternoon when things start, could present problems in itself with lots of contrast. I would like to try to see the difference. This was the last fight of the season, so it was now or never. It was a beautiful, cool, and cloudless day, just a little too late in the day. |

As it turns out, if anything is right on, it's the reds. The stockings and capes are, in real life very saturated, almost a dark hot pink, if there is such a color. The blood on the bull is actually quite dark, partly because it has started to dry, and also the color of the bull cutting back on the brightness. In no case do I remember seeing a bright red -- maybe in sunshine or on a white bull. And of course, it was getting dark already. |

Mike, there's something I like about the sky -- maybe it's just the slate blue color to go along with the green of the grass. But of course the more you include in the image, the farther the subject recedes. I believe Joe is right about the image being to much in the middle of everything, but there also seems to be a lack of detail in the cows, especially the eyes. I like the positioning of the cows nose to tail. Perhaps you should zoom into the cows even more. |

There's a lot to like about this picture Kaylyn. One of the features that add to this composition is the dog up front leading the way and the casual look of the rider. I tend to notice first in any image where the bright parts are, and in this case I think the background to the rider's left is distracting. I hope you don't mind if I did a little quick work to tone down the back and brightening the face of the cowboy, centering the focus of the composition on him, where it should be. This is a rough job, just a suggestion of things that can be done. |

I love this image Joe. Beautiful, spontaneous expression and the colors look great. Not much wrong with this -- perhaps bring out the eyes a little, and maybe tone down the blue in the hair? Excellent bokeh in the background which sets off her face perfectly. You'll do well with any competition you enter. |

John, interesting combining of the relatively smooth leaf with the thin, jagged and criss-crossing twigs. From what I can tell, the colors are spot-on, and portray the end days of autumn. Original idea; my only negatives is that the leaf is dead center, both horizontally and vertically, and some edges have a thin white edge to them. Overall, though, a very nice picture. |

I'll admit a personal bias here: I'm what is sometimes called a bridge buff, or what maybe today would be called a bridge nerd. They in contemporary life today are an essential component of the urban scene. I fully get Joe and Mike's objection in their comments but I'll go against the grain in this case and state that the bridge doesn't bother me, it adds gentle curves from the arches in contrast to the rigid vertical and horizontal lines of the buildings, and would not be an unexpected part of a cityscape. Besides, my mind "fills in" the missing parts of the buildings. Peggy, this is a very colorful image, and I like your second modification with more of the foreground revealed. Let's hear it for the under-appreciated bridge! |

Great conversion from an old slide. It suddenly inspires me to look through my stockpile of hundreds of old images. What scanning tool did you use? Beautiful saturation of the colors and a compelling subject matter. Quite sharp, also. I know it's daylight, but could the flames have been made a touch brighter? Others have mentioned the cropping. Very well done image. |
