If I had backed off then the sky would have been visible, which I didn't want. I could clip off some of the crest and do a little creative brush work to include the whole thing in the picture. And yes, I agree with your comment on the eyes. |

At 1/2000 of a second, wouldn't the issue be one of focus rather than shutter speed? |

Beautifully handled image -- the flower is off center and is balanced, in terms of the composition by the pads. There is no doubt about what the subject matter is. Great coloring. One minor point: the pads on the lower part of the picture have a slight, light blue halo surrounding them. I don't know if this was the way they actually appeared or if there was a bit of blue shift brought about during editing. |

If I eliminated the crest, would it make much difference to the overall composition? I suppose only a birder would notice... |

Aint nothin I can offer to improve on this; beautiful colors, nice 3D effect with the panels, the flow and rhythm of the branches, and simple but interesting subject. The only problem I can see is that you didn't enter this last October! I'd like to give this technique a try. Very well done. |

This is a pleasant image to look at and the poppies stand out nicely from the surrounding leaves, but I wonder if there could be more color saturation and a bit more contrast. The vignetting works well. The flower in the upper right should be cloned out and perhaps the flower touching the right edge can be moved in toward the rest. It is always a challenge to intensify colors with out losing the details. Maybe the central cluster of flowers could be brightened up with the dodge tool. |

John, this is an interesting idea -- the contrast between generations, but this photo just doesn't work for me. The man in the foreground is so sharply focused and the man in the back is so blurred that it seems like two different snapshots spliced together. You could argue that the bright green hair represents the "new" energy of youth and the blandness of the man in the back stands for advancing mid life, and there is that to say about this picture, but in terms of composition, it mostly misses the mark. Maybe if the green haired guy hadn't lost so much of his head to cropping
this might have different look. In the end each picture has to be more than simply a statement. |

Nice adjustments to arrive at the final version. The underside of the wings came out really well exposed considering the sun angle. Could you crop in even more from the top and left side? I can't make up my mind if the clouds at the bottom should be there. Perhaps the clouds add to the feeling of "flying high." Nice subtle coloring. You captured the elegance and the grace of these beautiful creatures. |

Wow! A very powerful image with lots of attached emotions. I think both the color and mono images work. I'm glad that you removed the backpack, which was a distraction from the main subject. However, I believe I see evidence of brushwork surrounding the man. You might try selecting out the man (just his back will do), inverse the image, and use the broad and soft clone brush tool to move right up to the marching ants -- that way there will seem to be a natural transition from background to person, and no "brush halo." Also, in Silver Effex, is there a preset that will allow for a more gritty and contrasty look in the mono version? You have the potential for a really great shot. |
