There's no doubt there are different ways of going about this. In this case I approached it as if there was a canvas, that is, one layer upon which I applied colors and "brush strokes" as if I were adding paint. And not "brushed" on colors in the traditional sense, rather it's as if I was using a palette knife. |

I, like Joe, am a bit confused here. This seems more like a critique than an explanation of how the image was done. Are there some wires crossed? |

Yeah, as I'm reflecting back on this result, I like the way the building turned out but
think maybe the foliage is too over-powering. Maybe the composition is saved by the contrast of the vivid blue of the engine with the green and yellow-green of the leaves. |

Great idea John! This could be an image that would be part of an advertising campaign. Do you have a background in commercial art? Joe has a great point about the placement of the dark tones over the light ones, but one could also make a case for seeing the dark as a night sky visible over a lighted landscape -- either way, I suppose. An original approach and nicely done! |

Great job of transporting the train to the great outdoors. The white balance is consistent from the train to the background, as if it were an overcast day. In theory,
the crossing could be there, but seems to end too abruptly at the tracks. Nice job of blending the smoke and steam in with the new background. |

Joe, by any chance is that you at the controls? Good job with the paint filter. Nice contrast and tones. Enjoyable to look at. At the base of the train, are parts of the steam a little too vivid as far as the blue saturation? |

I agree with Mike -- the sepia tone effect makes it look like an old picture you would come across in a history museum. That, and the light vignetting, which was not overdone. Lightening the buildings in the background helped bring out the train as the main subject. Maybe bring out the smoke a bit more? Well done! |

I really like the colors in your re-work; the pale blues and golds and silver-greens. The only drawback to me is that the smoke and steam look a little too "cut out." Maybe a little more blending in with the background? |
