I am not familiar with luminosity masking and will look into it. My pictures can always stand some improving! |

There is a lot going for this picture. First of all is mood -- I'm glad this was not a typical sunrise shot, here with the muted colors you demonstrate a creative approach to this subject. I like the curved lines of the shore, the watery reflection and the breaking waves that lead your eye to the pier. The buildings on the right could be seen as a distraction, but they also give a visual anchor to the pier. The temperature probably wasn't that low, but I like to think that someone would be out walking in raw weather where the "cold wind turns your head around" and the dark clouds certainly suggest that. I think maybe the pier is a little too centered in terms of its placement in the vertical middle of the image. Great shot! |

A different approach to a popular subject. I've shot lots of rodeo in the past few years, and I find that bull riding is a good news, bad news situation. It is the glamor part of modern rodeo but there is usually the problem of the riders not being able to get very far from the chutes, hence the challenge of isolating the subject from the background, especially on a sunny day. There is the additional "problem" -- that is of course from the standpoint of photography, I cannot take issue with safety precautions -- and that is that in recent times almost all riders now wear helmets and face guards, which obscure the face quite a lot. Given your constraints you came up with an interesting image that suggests a lot of rough, even brutal action. These guys sure earn their money, don't they? A tough life. |

Hi Mike, I see Raymond's point; when I first saw the original I thought it made for a
nice composition, the juxtaposition of "life (home and trees)" with the desolation, or maybe isolation, of someone's last stop. I think perhaps Raymond went too far in darkening the bottom portion of the picture. The cold feel here is very much in keeping with the theme. Mike, your final image has some interesting things going for it -- the fine lines of the fence and reeds contrasting with the heavy, solid grave marker. There may be too much empty space on the lower right side. But it does give an atmospheric feeling. |

Wow! I don't know which is more impressive -- the final result or learning all of the steps required to achieve it! Give me about 9 months and I will have your technique down cold... Striking image, all starting out from one object. The only negative, and this may strictly come down to differences in monitors, is the shade of green that makes up the background. Beautiful abstract. |

Nice shot, appropriate for Valentine's Day. However, being taken from the back side is a minus -- where the girl on the left side is standing may be the better angle. At the same time she is a distraction from the main subject(s), unless you intended the story to be the interaction of someone taking a picture of the couple. Possibly cropping more tightly into the couple? |
