Love it Oliver - you included more of her left hand, removed the mic and shadow and I think maybe sharpened it, and put more contrast on the guitar/hands and scarf - anyway a vast improvement enough to make me want to print it.
Hope you had a great trip(s) - I would really like to do a PSA annual meeting sometime - would be good to be able to hash over things together.

Yeah Paul, you win. As LuAnn astutely pointed out, the atmospheric effects are great, and what caught my attention are the geometrical shapes and repetitions of the buildings - a stairlike effect in places. Great contrasts too - very nicely done - bet it would look great matted and framed. |

Thanks very much LuAnn - I will definitely check out that technique. Best of luck with those classes - will your courses lead to a fine arts degree or something similar? I better hone my skills some more - the competition is getting very serious in this group! |

Yeah - ya done good Oliver. LuAnn's comments were spot on, so that leaves me with little room to wiggle. The portrait comp was a no brainer, but I might suggest a little darkened vignette using one of the NIK filters - you almost have this going on now with his sweater cuffs and upper left corner - perhaps just a brush of black or gray in the corners to draw a little more attention to the concentrated expression. No matter, it is still a very neat image . |

Hi LuAnn - I like the way your foreground is nice and sharp and contrasty - the small rocks and shadows lead right up to the cypress while the background remains soft and distant - my impression is that the subject tends to pop toward the viewer - nice effect. If I had any recommendation, it would be to try a portrait composition giving the cypress even a little more attention. After all, he is pretty lonely. I actually saw him around 1986 and took a 35mm film shot (maybe two) - I need to recover that picture. Thanks for reminding me. |

Thanks LuAnn - could not agree more about the shadow and the mic - the strings are an easy correction, but the left hand (even when working with the original color image) gave me some headaches when removing the cord and mic post at the guitar neck (hence, crop tighter). I think someone with more patience could make it look flawless. I took I think three or four separate shots at different points around her performance, but should have taken many more - better to not have to correct anything. Getting it right the first time is always preferred in both photography and brain surgery, as they say. Stay tuned for more from the land of kilts and whiskey! |
