I like what you did with this. You rescued the lighthouse from obscurity and with your treatments, turned it into something completely different. I like it. |

Welcome to the group, Brian. Your first image is amazing, especially with the first crop you tried at Rusty's suggestion.
You'll discover that I have a tendency to like to look at images from different angles. Here's a rendition with it flipped vertically, then horizontally: |

The sun is in just the right spot and its rays certainly draw the eye there. It does rather pull too much focus, but there's no info left there to ease it back successfully.
I do agree with Rusty about the blue posts. Here's a rendition with the posts more grey: |

This image is a surprise that sorta creeps up on you and then tickles your eyes. Very subtle in a good way. Quite enjoyable. |

Love the overall feel of the image and thought it told a nice holiday story. I agree that it was a bit blurry and somewhat busy.
I have sharpened the image and cropped it tighter on the inflatables. |

Great subject for macro, indeed. Plenty of detail and the diagonal lines make for a stronger composition. |

I definitely prefer the cropped version as it's easier to locate the focal point of the image.
You're at that tipping point regarding the sharpness - it either should be sharper or softer. Here's sharper: |

If you use a macro lens, there will be a point that is marked 1:1, which you need to set the lens to, turn off auto-focus, and move the camera or subject to get things in focus.
When shooting with a zoom lens, you'll need to experiment to determine how close you can get to fill the sensor. |

That's not what we're seeing. I always suggest that you produce as large an image as you can that will be under 1Mb in size. The dpi makes no difference here. |

Oh, but the cleanup of vaseline from the filter doesn't sound like fun. d;¬{D |

As you know, I'm no stranger to focus stacking, so I know I could get everything in focus, but that wasn't my goal here.
I actually took a shot at every f-stop as an experiment, and decided the widest capture had more potential to get close to the look that Carol gets with her images. I was just not sure which direction to go, but will certainly experiment further. |

Hmmm. Not done much of that, but I can envision it now that you point it out.
That's my problem, coming up with artistic ideas for images. |

I wasn't exactly looking for everything in focus, which is why I went with the largest aperture for that lens. Just not sure what will be the best approach to soften the areas that aren't in focus even more. Carol Sheppard is good at that. I'm used to going for everything in focus, especially doing focus stacks, but this time I thought it would be interesting to take a different approach. |
