Incredible portrait, Arabella! I happen to like seeing all the feathers, even if it overshadows the face a bit. You captured so much wonderful detail. The only suggestion I would make is to darken the background a bit to help his face show up more, and do some targeted dodging & burning of his face to add more depth: |

Wow! Your image sparked a whole lotta activity this month!
Even at a distance, I imagine the sound of all those geese honking and flapping their wings was quite the experience.
In the other 2 renditions, as with this version, I flipped the image horizontally so they were flying left to right. I also removed some distractions, including the water, and actually some of the geese as the scene was very chaotic. What do you think? |

Here's a take on the suggestions. I did it in a hurry so the cloning is not the bestest, but it should get the point across: |

Great concept with this lighthouse and executed well. Monochrome is the right choice.
I chose a slightly different crop and removed the fencing. What do you think? |

What a location! I bet you got lots of images here - I know I would have.
I agree with Miriam's removal of the extra kayaks. I had a go at bringing out more color and texture. What do y'all think? |

That does create a natural diagonal - something I wouldn't have seen on my own. Thanks for the insight. d:¬{D |

This will probably work really well with the hummingbird. I have to agree with Bill, though, that this seems more of a close-up.
I didn't notice the butterfly until I read your description. Since it doesn't really jump out, I don't really see it as a distraction. |

Great to have you with us, Tiffany! What a wonderful image to start off with - you may end up making us all look bad. d;¬{D
Can you tell us a bit about what equipment you're using for your macro work - camera, lens, etc.? |

I don't think a real microscope is in my future, so I'll stick with the 5x limit for now. I may try an extension tube just to see how difficult it will be. d;¬{D |

Lovely flower - simple yet involved and a good subject for macro.
So tell us what you thought about using the extension tubes? Did they pass the signal to the lens or just extend the focal distance?
I got a set that passes the signal from the camera to the lens and use them with my macro lens, which gets me to 2x magnification.
I had a go at targeted dodging & burning on your image to bring out more depth, as well as a little added clarity: |

Not bad at all for a single image at 4x magnification, especially with such a shallow DOF. You've managed a lot of detail in the hairs. It would have been cool to see a stack of this to compensate for the DOF.
The thing I miss when using my Laowa Ultra Macro is a polarizing filter and it appears you have the same issue with a lot of specular highlights present. I'm playing around with under-exposing a bit to help combat that.
It is a bummer that magnification is not an EXIF field, but manual lenses don't do a lot of communication with the camera anyway. Still, it simplifies things to only have to deal with one lens without a lot of added pieces.
Someone I converse with on MeWe also has a Laowa Ultra Macro and is playing around with using it with extension tubes to get even closer. I don't know - it's difficult enough to get everything right at 5:1 - I can't imagine how difficult it would be even closer with a DSLR. |
