I went even tighter than either of your crops, which gives me the sense that this is now a slice of very dense trees, where the open space at the sides make them seem isolated. I also went ahead and added some sharpening to better define the trees: |

Very nice location and a lot of options for post-processing.
I'm finding your rendition too dark for my taste, with the shadows taking on too much precedence as compared to the original. This hides much of the detail and gives off a sense of foreboding that I find disconcerting.
I had a go at working a monochrome version from your original and came up with the following: |

Such an intense image! Your composition pits the subject against a harsh world, which has embittered him/her into making a hard shell to hide behind.
For me, I want to study the person, who is isolated to such a small portion of the image, making the surroundings the predominant focus. Here is my rendition focusing on the person: |

A very apt visualization of the geese flying 'V' formation, finished off nicely with Sharron's adjustments. The monochrome works so much better than the original color version. Well done, Allen. |

You found the right combination of adjustments to take this to the next level, Sharron. |

ROFLMA!!! Wonderful compositing, Kerstin!!!
I wouldn't worry too much about the background, as your subject is plenty eye-catching! Please keep up the great work!!! |

She hasn't ventured an opinion on any of the artistic renderings so far. Don't think she's much into that.
I was going for a sci-fi look, so it would seem you think it works. Yay! d;¬{D |

Yes, sharpening the lion is what will make this image what it can be. I fiddled with that and brightened the eyes a bit, too: |

This is an awesome rendition, Ian!!! Bravo!
I'll admit to not caring much for Topaz Glow in most of my experimentation with it. This, however, was a good image for it as the effect turns this into something I can see on an office wall. Thanks for sharing this and inspiring me to take another look at Glow. d:¬{D |

I do like the colors and tones here - the palette is very pleasing. At first glance, this image seemed very abstract to me. Within a few moments, the soldiers came into focus - almost like one of those Magic Eye images. This is not abstract enough to be studied comfortably as my mind is working very hard to decipher the elements into recognizable objects - such as the holster of a soldier just to the right of the middle head. Perhaps you would be better off going more detailed or more abstract, but not in this middle ground. Here's a rendition that attempts more abstract: |

Very different, in many ways. I do a lot of auto photography, so I recognized what it was, but can easily see why most folks would not see it at first. Certainly, I've never done anything like this and it was a pleasant surprise! Good job! |

Wow! Hot is definitely the operative word here! I can feel the sweat beads forming on my face!!!
I agree about the noise. Took a try at reducing it some, slightly cropping the image to take the hot spot off center, and did a little cloning to cover the areas that were completely burned out: |

While I have seen trees with leaves in the snow, it doesn't work in this image for those splashes of color to be present.
Here's a rendition with the leaves gone: |

Hmmm. While that definitely brings the magazine into play, I think it gives it too much focus, so that the eye goes there and only finds mom & baby later. I think you're on to something, though, and I will experiment more with this. Good idea! |
