The reflections were natural and were not added. I shot these subjects on a piece of Black Solid Opalescent "Art" Glass by Spectrum (catalog 1009S). |

I have used Photoshop to add and enhance surfaces. Look at the image submitted by Prisilla, to see one type of surface / background that you could try. Also in some of my macro shots I add a surface (see attached image as an example). The later is done by adding a blank layer, adding a series of lines (Filter => Render => Fibers), using the Transform tool to add perspective (Transform => Perspective, make the top more narrow and the base wider), set the blend mode of the new layer to OVERLAY and reduce the opacity, and final mask out the main subject. In the example below I had also added a dark gradient to aid in the effect. One also might add an artificial horizon and masking out the background above that horizon to create something like what we see in Prisilla's image. Just a thought. |

This is really a lovely still life image in both in its subject, composition and colors. I can't discount though, the comment made by Neal regarding the "static" feel of the scene and I am struggling to figure out why I agree (to some extent). Perhaps if you were to add a bit stronger side-lighting and emphasize the fall-off of light across the subject, this might add a bit more feeling or depth to the scene. Light is so critical in still life images in which the fall-off of light plays such a critical role. Food fro thought |

This is a really striking rendition and I really am enjoying the final composition. I don't disagree with the earlier comments. I don't think that the addition of the drops on the right side adds to the image, and in this case may detract a bit from the overall effect. I would remove these elements and then crop a bit in from both the right and top to center your subjects a bit more. Aside from those points a really striking image. Well Done. |

Great rendition of this plant and it's colorful blooms. The simplicity of the composition with the clean background really enhances the plant's presentation. Due to the fact that the plant is so prominent in the image, its clear that it's the main subject. Being so, I am bit disappointed in the clarity of the subject. Being the star of the show this is it's time to shine, and the soft nature of the bloom distracts for it's color and shape. Perhaps this is due to the slide-transfer. |

Nice job on getting the exposure just right. The detail and "character" of the bloom comes across and the drops only enhances the image. I don't disagree with any of the earlier comments. Great Job ! |

This image demonstrates it's incredible detail, color and clarity as noted earlier, and is well done. I am not sure if I am a fan of the background, and with showing this subject floating in a sea of black. This type of presentation certainly highlights the subject, but lacks any relationship to the surrounding environment. I suspect that this is a personal preference, but I would have liked to have seen a slight horizon line of some other indication of the environment that the critter is located in. Just a thought. |
