As I was framing the image, I struggled with if I should leave some of the toy edges visible or just include the central parts. Although there is no right or wrong here, I opted for including a small amount of the outside edges as framing elements. In a sense, this reduces slightly the mystery as to what it is that you are looking at, without destroying the overall effect. You may decide to do something differently, but that is the fun of it all. |

What an interesting flower arrangement image. There is a lot going on here in terms of focus, shape and color, and while interesting, it all looks to me as though is a bit too much. The elements in sharpest focus are the elements that our eyes are drawn to, and here that is both the central bloom (which I think is your primary subject) and the bloom in the upper right (which acts as a secondary and perhaps a distracting element). In this case rather than adding a sense of place and context (which might be some of the reasons for including these elements), the background stems and blooms add a level of confusion and distraction to the image. Here I believe that less would be more. If this were my image, I would emphasize the central bloom while deemphasizing the stems and blooms in the background. I would do this using an altered crop, and a blurred, darkened and desaturate background. I have included an example of this to illustrate my thoughts here. Better yet, I might try to reshoot the shot to include a less complicated version of these background elements. I would like to hear what attributes and element are being emphasized in the Artistic Floral photography presentations, to understand better some of the thoughts that went into your image. |

What an imaginative and effective approach to showing this critter. I have seen a lot of insect macro shots, but none as dramatic or as effective as this. The composition with the curved base is both very artistic and effective. There is a sufficient level of detail within the silhouetted mantis to spark our interest, yet the silhouetted form gives a sense of mystery to the presentation. This is by far your best entry to date. Very nicely done. |

In this image, I feel that you have demonstrated one of the essential attributes of macrophotography that of showing us in detail, views of the natural world that we otherwise do not normally see. I call this "making the commonplace uncommon" and I try to make this one of the hallmarks of my personal macrophotography style. Here you have brought us right down to the level of the subject both figuratively and visually. I love the detail, colors and your choices as to what to retain as sharp. The falloff in focus of the background is nicely done and gives us a sense of depth in this image. Finally, I like the composition of the subjects. Each main subject is clearly defined, but he slight overlap provides a sense of interaction that adds to the final image. Nicely done.

What a fun and imaginative shot. You have done a nice job in using a crystal globe to give us a different look in this orchid image. I am enjoying the differential focus provide by the globe of the flower. This adds a bit of mystery to the shot. I think that the only thing I might do here was to darken the area outside of the globe a bit more to retain the eye of the viewer more toward the center of the globe, but this is a minor point. Nicely conceived and executed. |

This image exemplifies how one can use macrophotography to create images with an interesting point of view. Here I am enjoying the overall feel of the image including the composition and colors in this shot. The differential focus of the bells is especially effective and pleasing, so kudos for not making all of the bells sharply in focus. The background is also nicely done resulting in a snow-like feel. All-in-all, a wonderful image with a holiday card feel (which was your intent). Nicely done. |
