69 Feb 23 Reply This one is somewhat tough to crop. The bird direction is to the left but the head of the bird is to the right! I am not sure which way to crop is the most appropriate. Normally I follow the gaze of the animal. Feb 24th
69 Feb 23 Reply Hi Christine. Macrophotography is not easy... Being as low as possible will help isolate your subject from its background. With respect to the translucid wings, the right light angle can make a big difference. Sometimes, the wings will be up and away from the background.
Although not perfect, I took the liberty to add an example.

69 Feb 23 Comment Hi Christine,
Lovely image. As the dragonfly and the flower plane of field were parallel to your lens, the subjects (dragonfly and flower) are in good focus.
The background is a bit distracting. Ways to minimize this: 1) go lower down - this way the background would be further away (can be tough on my knees...) 2) you can use a brush and decrease the clarity and exposure to the background.
You did not mention which camera you were using. Mirrorless cameras are offering "focus-stacking" option which will help you with smaller insects.
Nice work. Looking forward to see more of your close-up/macro images!

69 Feb 23 Comment Hi Ken,
Welcome to PSA DD 69.
Storytelling image. There is evidence of movement in the lower left fish, while the center one looks suspended.
As you mentioned, minimizing the light reflections is a must in this type of image (through glass). You used a rubber hood but there is another gadget the "Lenskirt" (commercial name) which allows a bit more flexibility.
Great first image. I am looking forward to see more...

69 Feb 23 Comment Hi Cindy,
Lovely picture. I completely agree with you about the mother's face. This image would be much more powerful if the whole head would have been included, especially if the mother was making eye contact with her child.
In this situation, I am not sure if keeping the mother lower face is better or not. I like the idea of Dean but still unsure of which version I prefer.
Nice work with your editing. It would be nice to see your original image.
I tried in the past to get some images of gorillas in our local zoo. Unfortunately, the glass was tinted and I was never happy with the white balance corrections that I attempted.
Was the vitrine tinted? If so, you did a wonderful job in correcting it.
Very nice image.

69 Feb 23 Comment Hi Jacob,
Is this another image taken with your iPhone?
Remarkable improvement in your technique and editing since you joined this group.
As your capture plan was parallel to the subject, everything, except for the background is in focus.
I agree with Dean that your background was a bit bright and distracting.
I do not have a problem with your cropping. Sometimes with this type of subjects a completely square crop with a center subject is pleasing.
Decreasing the shadows/blacks might help in improving the details in the abdomen of this bee.
Well done.

69 Feb 23 Comment Another lovely B/W image. Nice mirror image of the cloudy sky and trees. Nice details throughout.
I believe that the B/W version works very well with this image. Although unusual for me, I think that I prefer your monochrome version.

Cropping: I would have the tendency to crop the bottom a little bit to allow the mirror intersection right in the middle. I took the liberty of suggesting this variant:

69 Feb 23 Comment Wow. This image certainly tells a story. The rapid shutter speed allowed to freeze the action perfectly.
As Dean mention, this Egret was quite agile!
In respect to the cropping, I might have tendency to reveal a little more on the left side of the frame. To have the mirror reflection intercept right in the middle between top and bottom allows to keep the whole bird reflection and is very appropriate.
Another keeper!

69 Feb 23 Comment Hi Dean. This car was bright red and polished like a mirror. The sun was bright.
You are right: this reflected image is both a mirror and a partial shadow.

70 Feb 23 Reply Thanks Geoff,
The person in the front is my 1st boy (3rd child). I decided to keep him in as to give a relative perspective to the grandeur of this place.
I agree with you with the logs. Unfortunately, the previous winter there was really snowy with multiple avalanches. These trees all over the place were the results of these avalanches. Multiple trails were closed off…

70 Feb 23 Comment Hi Tami,
Lovely image. The inclusion of the bicycle really tells a story. The color palette and mood are really nice. Seeing the musician from the back allows you to publish this image without the need for a signed authorization. I personally find that seeing the musician from the back increases the "mystery" of the whole scene.
Remarkable improvement of your perspectives. All the vertical lines are perfectly straight and parallel.
As judges of architectural photography are very picky, I slightly cropped the right side of your image to allow complete symmetry between the right and the left. Furthermore, the ceiling light is also centered.
It would be very interesting to see your original image.
Very well done. Congrats!

70 Feb 23 Comment Very nice telescopic effect of all these doors lined up. Nice work in preserving the texture of these old stones and mortar. Nice streaks of light throughout the image.
A keeper!

70 Feb 23 Comment Very nice image. I agree with Stephen: my attention is initially to the bottom left of the image with this green balloon, and then I follow to the top and right of the image as we move towards the background.
I would have liked a less foggy/hazy background. I took the liberty to decrease the haze and increase the saturation to the upper portion of the image. I am not perfectly happy with my tweaks due to the limitations of this small JPG file.
Wonderful image.

70 Feb 23 Comment Very nice. All in focus. You did not mention which lens you were using, but to get everything in focus like this, despite being at f/9 suggests a fairly wide angle.
Multiple directing lines guiding one's eye.
Excellent!

70 Feb 23 Comment Very nice. This is a great way to avoid "burning" pixels with the bright sunlight. Nice cropping and colors. You did not mention your shutter speed, but everything looks crips - probably due to the the absence of wind.
Simply lovely.

70 Feb 23 Comment Quite the dramatic sky. Nice capture with a slow shutter speed allowing this silky water.
The perspective lines are all respected (juges are very picky about this in "Architectural Photography").

A minor issue: Because the clouds were moving quickly, the long exposure created a blur, especially on the East (right) of your image. One of the way to avoid that is to combine 2 images: one for the water with a slow shutter speed, and one for the city and sky with a higher shutter speed. This superposition of 2 images is also very useful with silky falls when there is a significant breeze blurring all the leaves...
