Really nice. Fantastic separation between the subject and the branch from the background. Very nice directing lines and framing. Another keeper! |

I agree with all the comments above. You are improving your skills every month.
As mentioned above, choosing the background is almost as essential as the subject.
This house sparrow is obviously small, but the main advantages in trying to get the animal at eye level are: 1: separation of the background from the animal - this really helps in getting an "out of focus" background. 2) to see the eyes of the animal, especially with a light reflection, makes the animal "live".
Mervyn's comment is very appropriate re getting back up is not easy anymore! Using "live view" with a angulated screen really helps!
Look at the Capuchin image of Mervyn this month.- This Capuchin is "talking" to you - when you look at this image, you are interacting with this monkey.
Keep up the good work.

Very nice capture. Tells a story. Nice framing.
In respect to your inquiry, it is always difficult to take a backlit picture like this one without "burning" the overexposed pixels. Underexposing can certainly help reduce this issue, but then one had to lighten the shadows in post-processing.
Although difficult in this situation, another option is to bracket your exposure and pick the image with the best compromise in post-processing. |

Fantastic capture. This capuchin expression if great - tells a story. To keep the whole tail is very nice - very strong guiding lines - great positioning.
A keeper for sure. |

Hi Dean. I totally agree with you. I would have like to catch them from the front, but I prefer not to get in the way of two bucks in rut! |

Hi Brenda,
I think that this is a better version. I selectively decreased the sharpness around the subjects and increased on the 2 stags.
This image was captured at the end of November 2022 in a nature preserve very close to Buffalo, NY.
You are right, on the left is a tree on the ground without its bark. |

These programs can allow you to determine the perfect time and location for these types of images.
A perfect example is the Mount Fuji "Diamond" with the sun setting exactly at the tip of the volcano and with the perfect diamond shape reflection in one of the small lakes at the base of it.
I totally agree with you. I am far from using these programs efficiently - takes a significant time commitment to do so! |

This is a really nice image. I agree with Geoff's comment.
Perfect timing + you were in the perfect spot. Did you plan this image using one of the app such as "PhotoPills" to TPE? |

Very nice image. The cliffs are very nicely enhanced by the sunlight. Nice framing and directing lines.
One of the decisions in capturing this image is to decide if one would like "crisp" water, "silky" water or something in between.
It would be interesting to get comments on how to choose between these options. |

Nice image. I like your framing and positioning of the elements - tree - Rocks - savanna.
I would have like to see more of the marbles on the right, but doing so would have affected the balance.
Nicely done. |

Thanks Kirk. This is exactly what draw me to take this image. I would have loved to have an animal or human close by, and/or further away to accentuate the perspective... oh well! |

Lovely image. Nice scene, with good framing and perspective. This image tells a story. The color palette and sunlight reflection add to the appeal.
It is challenging to take an image while pointing directly at the sun (especially if nothing is in front of the sun). Unless the camera exposure is brought way down (EV -5 or so), one ends up with "burned pixels" and the result is a "pure" white area. Not an easy issue to resolve. One way is to have something in front of the sun (such as clouds, mast of the sailboat, people, etc...). Another way is to bracket the exposure which is very tricky when there is movement in the scene. Lastly, one can significantly underexpose and then decrease the "black" and "shadows" but this could affect the quality of the final image.
It would be interesting if anyone else can comment on this recurring issue.
