Hi Dean. I agree with the comments above. Is this a baby red squirrel? |

I did not think about that! it looks like the pollen of Eastern Cottonwood trees - normally later on in the season. One of the nature preserve that I walk through had a lot of these pollens - very annoying!

I love it. Nice capture of this emu herd in their environment. I would not mess up with these birds. They can run fast and can hurt you with their beak.
I can't wait to visit your country!
Thanks for sharing. |

Hi Jacob, It could be difficult to improve the contrast between the subject and the background. One could select/mask as Brenda suggested.
When finding a subject of interest, the selection of a non-competing background is extremely important. Did you try to take this picture from different angles? Most of the time, going way down would have allowed you to eliminate a lot of this distracting background, by moving right or left or around, etc.... It is much easier to compose your image right on the spot than trying to do all the work in post-processing. |

Great image. I love the expression, the directing lines, the background, and the cropping. All the essential elements are sharp.
p.s.: Even in the Green Heron world, a little hair gel can do the trick! |

Great catch for this Green Heron and for Mervyn! I love these small and very skilled birds. The color transitions are very well demonstrated. I would submit this image without any retouching. |

Thank you for all these constructive comments. How to crop, what to keep, what to remove, etc... are essential questions and are also part of an artistic statement. I always struggle with this fine balance.
I agree with all that I took the liberty of choosing a wide cropping for this image.
My underlying reasons were to reinforce the loneliness of this poor Great Egret that ended up alone in this pond/marsh during a snow flurry + directing lines from the logs in the water + the mirror image in the water + keeping the tree branches continuity with the trunk on the left + keeping the hay/cattails on the bottom right + contour of the marsh on the top left. |

Don't be so hard on yourself. Photography is a mixture of technique, planning, selection of scenery and background, and a lot of artistic flair/skills.
We are all learning.

Hi Ellen,
Although I like the directing lines and the contrast between the water and the earthy land, I find that, except for the sky and the water, everything is brownish.
I took the liberty to work on it using ON1. I selectively increase the saturation of the brown, orange, etc.. and decreased the saturation in blues, decreased the shadow, increase the mid-tones and remove the small bird on the top right corner. Working on a small JPG version is obviously not ideal. I am not sure that my version is better than yours - I think that the basic problem is the brown monotony. |

Hi Frans. Working under pressure!
Nice panoramic capture. I personally like the original image more than the sky swapping. (I am probably too much of a purist to use sky swapping!)
On the original image, I would have simply used a neutral density filter to tone down the brightness of the sky and brighten up the bottom, starting right at the horizon line (bridge) - and maybe some minor tweaks after that.

Hi Ellen. I stayed purposely on the shore to conserve some foreground/window. It would have been very easy to move on the ice, and by this way adding more of the sky colors on the right side, but... I would have lost my foreground as well as my elevation.
It was cold that morning. I had snow pants on, mitts, remote control to avoid exposing my finger for too long, a warm tuque and hood, and warm boots. I still had to move around to keep myself warm! |

Thank you Mary,
I tried to reproduce the scene accurately. I did enhance the saturation but did not want to push more. The snow color is a reflection of the sky. |
