69 Mar 21 Reply Hi Jacob,
We are all trying to improve how to become better photographers. Instead of a quick click we try to pre-visualize what we need to capture and how to enhance an OK image into a Great image.
The art of photography is quite similar in multiple aspect to the art of painting. Look at the images of great photographers and painters and try to discover what you like, what makes it great, etc.... You can easily look at portfolio of great photographers and you can download apps for famous paintings. Try to understand why you find why you find that some images are "speaking" to you and others might let you indifferent.
Without a "focus" or directing lines, it is difficult to be really interested in looking at an image over and over again.

69 Mar 21 Reply Hi Brenda,
I have been in your situation multiple times. Not easy. We all have biases and can't be totally objective when comparing our own "creations" with the creations of others. Furthermore, we are all trying to discover what we find more appealing/pleasing, and this is in flux. When I look at images I took 45 years ago.....
Of all these versions, the one I like the most is the one suggested by Isaac.
Keep on the good work!

69 Mar 21 Comment Hi Jacob,
I agree with the previous comments. I like the dark green tones in your image but I would like to be guided through (guiding lines). Can this image tell a story?
I took enormous liberties here by giving an early morning feel by mimicking the morning dew + by centering more the bright trees in an effort to focus on the center of the image. I am sure that others could have their own "twists" One of the concepts in photography is "pre-visualization" (Ansel Adams). When taking an image, see in your mind what you are planning to do to make it a "great" image. In this case, you can go back to the same spot, but very early in the morning, aiming toward the rising sun, at a path in the forest, etc....

69 Mar 21 Reply I agree. I just kept the colors and tone as it was at the time. Thick layer of clouds...
Thanks

69 Mar 21 Reply Yes, I do like the original better. I would still crop the bottom to have the pads in the center being the focus of your image. Mar 7th
69 Mar 21 Comment Hi Brenda,
I agree with the above comments. Very bright but the front, back and the right side are not in focus. I would probably crop these area and focus on the middle group and probably decreasing a bit the saturation.
The flower dead center is very sharp. Although you did not mention your f/stop, it must have been very low.
These pads are amazing! So big, and with an edge that ed up.

69 Mar 21 Comment Nice work Candy. The head looks like an alien creature! Stay away from them as their poison is very toxic and painful.... I did some snorkeling in Looe Key Reef (Florida - Near Big Pine Key), area where the Man-O-War are frequently seen. We were told to wear full wet suits and always look up when coming back to the surface to avoid them....
This image should be put on warning signs so people would know what to look for! These can be pretty big and the juxtaposition of the algae helps in this respect.
Very nice image.

69 Mar 21 Comment Hi Mervyn and Dean,
I agree with you. The reason I did this crop is due to other birds around that were distracting and incomplete. Instead of Ă‚«Ă‚ erasingĂ‚ Ă‚» them, I just cropped a little tighter. I felt that this family was going to the left, leaving the right side to their past - aiming at their future destination. (Initially, I was under the impression that the darker ones were older - in fact, the darker ones are the juveniles....)

69 Mar 21 Comment Hi Dean,
I like both of them. Unless you decide to add colors to your image, the original must be the colored one!
With the color version I would probably want to increase the contrast and saturation a bit. Maybe adding more light to the top and making it darker on the bottom would also help.

The B/W version is very appealing with all the shades between white and black represented + nice patterns.

69 Mar 21 Comment Hi Mervyn,
Very nice capture. I love to observe these green heron. For me, it looks more like he was threatened by another bird. Obviously, I was not there to see the scene. In my experience they will stand on branches that are just above the water and then will stretch their neck incredibly fast at 45 degree or so towards the water below. This one looks like he was looking straight in front of him instead of below him....
Very crisp, nice colors and composition.

70 Mar 21 Reply I like it just like that. These are likely the true colors considering the sky.

70 Mar 21 Reply Interesting crop and different feel. The reason I did a horizontal crop was to keep the feel of the breath of the scenery and the cloud color changes that were very far away. I also like your crop that accentuate the depth of the land.
Thanks Frans.

70 Mar 21 Comment Such a wonderful image. Nice perspectives, colors, lines, reflections, clouds,... and to top it all, the presence of cirrocumulus!
I love these shimmery clouds. From what I understand, there are unstable and caused by freezing water droplets (causing diffraction) in the clouds from high altitude cold air currents.
It looks like I am not the only crazy guy that likes the cold wintery air quality and scenery!

70 Mar 21 Reply Thank you for your kind words Judy.
I love the morning Twilight and early sunrise. I found it very energizing.
This place is approximately 1 hour away from my place and I like to be there 45 min or so before the sunrise. I believe that scenes like this are making this effort worth it.
I like it particularly in the winter as the air is very crisp. (Yep, it can be cold in the winter before the sunrise!) Much less humidity leads to less haze!
p.s.: There is a bald eagle on the island to the left that can be seen with full definition!

70 Mar 21 Comment Nice symmetry, even the palm trees are pretty symmetrical!
Having a single tourist in that position adds a nice touch.
Nice work.

70 Mar 21 Comment Very nice lines and composition.
My only issues is that the trees are Ă‚«Ă‚ softĂ‚ Ă‚» in the back. Maybe using Todds technique with a foreground focus and a background focus (and focus stacking) would have done the trick. I would have expected all in focus with a wide angle and f/22!
Very typical farm land!

70 Mar 21 Comment Hi Kathryn,
For me the colors are looking pretty natural and illustrate very well the Ă‚«Ă‚ orangeĂ‚ Ă‚» hour. Very nice textures in the rock with so many crevasses and spires in the background, sandy in the middle and fine foliage in the foreground - all very sharp.

Very nicely done. A Keeper.

70 Mar 21 Comment Hi Todd,
Lovely result. Mixing up B/W with the green trees adds a nice touch. Another way to accomplish this is by desaturating all colors except for green. Nice silky water fall - vail like!

70 Mar 21 Comment Ghostly! Interesting that all looks compressed despite using a 100 mm lens. The water evaporation/ fog is really affecting our sense of perspective. These cargos are really big... but so is San Francisco. From your perspective, Coit Tower (on Telegraph Hill) should be easily seen - completely gone! Very smart for the sailor of this single mast sailboat to stay away from that fog.
Nicely done. (I am not sure if I would keep the seagull on the left.... - a bit distracting).
