For me, cropping is a very complex topic. The same image can be cropped in various ways. No right - no wrong. Studying paintings and classic photographers is very helpful. I found the rule of 3rds is a good start but not absolute. Sometimes one also needs to consider the definition of an image. Cropping too much, especially at high ISO and with very small sensors, can result in a very granular image at the end.....

Lovely family scene. I think that the original crop is my favorite as there is room for the all the elephants (including the baby) to more forward.
Well captured. |

Hi Dean
I love your very colorful picture. The bee is adds to the story.
I find that the decision of how to crop or not to crop is not aways easy!
(To crop or not to crop, I there's the point, die, to fleepe, is that all?)
Nice job. |

Hi Candy,
I love the coast of Oregon, although it rains a lot there! I agree with the above comments. I imported your image in LightRoom and tried to improve the perspective giving the impression that you were not that high up, but was not successful.
Nice story and guiding lines.
Would have been nice to go down the cliff a little, but could have been very slippery and dangerous. The volcanic rocks of the Oregon shoreline are quite rough on your skin if you fall (from personal experience!)
Lovely work as usual. |

Cloudy days are perfect! The clouds are working as a diffuser, preventing harsh shadows.
Nice shot with a phone. I would have tendency to crop much more, although the risk is to increase the noise/decrease the definition.

Lovely path. Despite the risk of a cougar or a panther lurking around, you took your time to frame this picture perfectly!
My only suggestion would be to crop the right 2/3 of the tree on the right side to remove this blurred short branch in the middle right of the picture.

Really nice!
I love the look of surprise if this very young monkey. This is a very dynamic picture. Perfectly cropped. Story telling. The tail is not in focus but I believe that it adds to the 3 dimension effect.
Lovely. |

Hi Candy,
Good eye - and yes. I tried to read it on the magnified original but can't decipher. Sorry! |

Thanks for these very kind compliments. Appreciated. I am certainly not an expert but I just try to keep it simple.
I try to follow the rule of 3rds most of the times and the 1/2 when appropriate with a mirror reflection. I find that the rule of thirds nicely gives a 3 dimension feel with the foreground, main subject and background. |

Tricky to take a nice and dark scene on a boat! Great job. I agree with all the previous edits. Your camera will always try to bring the overall light level to "medium" gray. I personally like it a little darker like you - which is more like reality. (Full black is not black on the picture until we go down 1 or 2 stops - Snow is not white unless we crank up 1.5 stop or so....) |

Hi Judy,
Nice scene. My tendency would be to crop out most of the water on the bottom to get a 1/3 reddish sky, 1/3 mountains (down to the horizon) and 1/3 water (below the horizon). I would see if increasing slightly the saturation or the orange slider would increase the "wow" factor. (possibly a tiny bit of dehazing.... and increased contrast).
I worked a bit on it but difficult due to the small file...

Steptoe butte! Quite a difference compared to my experience in September last year!
Very nice view with undulating hills and shadows and good complement with this sky.
Really nice! |

Hi Wayne,
Nice composition. I like the leading lines and scenery. The trees in the foreground are a bit blurred to me.
I would have considered increasing your f stop. It should be possible to take a sharp picture, hand held, at 1/150 sec. This camera offers stabilization. Even if you consider the crop factor of your sensor to 3.9, a sharp picture should be possible at 1/100 sec.
Totally agree with you about the weight of the equipment. This is the main reason I now use a micro 4/3 instead of a full frame camera! |

Hi Todd. This must be a huge file.
Orange light and low shadows. Could be either sunrise or sunset.
On my screen, the treetops in the center are green but violet on the extreme left (also looks much brighter in that area). Also some violet hues on the right side of the 2 main group of trees.
The texture of these massive trees is well preserved. |

Not always easy to distinguish between a B&W and an Infrared photography... What did you use? |

If I was to go back now, it would look really different without the snow.... The warblers are starting their migration. This will be my focus for the next few weeks.... |

Thanks Judy. As I was driving over a bridge I saw that scenery over the river. I had to stop and get that shot. This is a spot about an hour away from where I live. I had to get up pretty early to get there for the sunrise!

Hi Lamar,
Thanks for these nice comments.
I did several cropping versions and had difficulty deciding which one I like better. I felt that the light shining through the treetops water evaporation added a more ethereal feeling but I also like your version.
